Somkid Engages in Talks with Uttama to Push Economic Stimulus Measures
On November 21, 2019, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak stated after an urgent meeting with Finance Minister Uttama Savanayana, which included a discussion with Apirak Sukprasert, the manager of the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC), regarding the slowing economy. They are brainstorming new measures to further stimulate the economy as the year comes to a close. He expressed concern that the most pressing issue for the economy right now is confidence. This year is crucial, and we must not allow the momentum supporting economic growth to slow down too much, so that we can adequately drive the economy forward next year and beyond.
"The economy at this time is important; everyone must contribute to improving economic growth in the fourth quarter of this year, which will serve as a foundation for next year's economy. Currently, people are uncertain about what next year’s economy will look like, so we need to ensure that Thailand's economy this year remains strong," said Somkid.
Regarding Thai exports in October 2019, which remain in negative growth, he suggested that the Ministry of Commerce should be consulted on how to address this issue. He acknowledged that the slowdown in exports cannot be blamed on anyone, as the global economic slowdown is a result of the trade war, which affects exports for every country worldwide. Therefore, everyone must work together to solve this problem.
Nonetheless, the Ministry of Finance is preparing additional economic stimulus measures, which will be announced soon.
