Projecting the Past to Design the Future of the City at the Exhibition 'Projecting Future Heritage: A Hong Kong Archive'
The rotating architecture exhibition ‘PROJECTING FUTURE HERITAGE: A HONG KONG ARCHIVE’ officially opened on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the former residence of His Royal Highness Prince Sawaid Phrawat (Sommat Amornpan).
This exhibition was first showcased at the Hong Kong Pavilion during the Biennale Architettura 2025 in Venice, Italy, bringing the public architectural archive of Hong Kong to Bangkok in response to the theme of Biennale Architettura 2025 “Intelligence - Nature - Artificial Intelligence - Collective.” Curators Fai Au, Ying Zhou, and Sunnie S.Y. Lau presented concepts of collective thought arising from public structures in Hong Kong, reflecting the paradigm shifts of the city over time.

The exhibition reveals how Hong Kong's architectural works and urban development have addressed significant challenges faced by cities worldwide for decades, including climate change, urban density management, and preserving cultural spaces for public use.

The exhibition in Bangkok features approximately 30 works, including mixed-use buildings, multipurpose markets, cooperative housing, government housing projects, roadside infrastructure, the impact of airport development, and public spaces within residential projects. These works, designed by local architects, have not been extensively documented, studied, or internationally showcased. In addition to presenting architectural works, the exhibition invites questions about the value of “everyday architecture,” as these public structures play a crucial role in shaping cities and the lives of people. The curators highlight the concept of “collective intelligence” arising from design, usage, and coexistence in Hong Kong's public spaces as knowledge reflecting the city's transitions, which may become a “heritage of the future” as these structures fade away.

This rotating architecture exhibition is organized by The Hong Kong Institute of Architects Biennale Foundation (HKIABF), with The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) as a partner, and is primarily supported by The Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The exhibition in Bangkok promotes the exchange of perspectives between cities regarding architecture, cultural heritage, and sustainable urban development between Hong Kong and Thailand, aligning with the concept of the Belt and Road Initiative, which emphasizes connectivity and sustainable development.

The exhibition is free to visit from today until February 13, 2026, at the former residence of His Royal Highness Prince Sawaid Phrawat (Sommat Amornpan). After the exhibition in Bangkok, “Projecting Future Heritage: A Hong Kong Archive” will be showcased in Hong Kong and Shanghai from March to June 2026, focusing on the role of water as both a resource and a vulnerability, as well as a connection point in the flow of resources and knowledge in both prehistoric and contemporary contexts, influencing how “heritage of the future” is defined and recognized. Visitors stepping into the exhibition space in Bangkok will embark on their own experience between the world of archives and the world of projecting the future, through interactions with objects brought from Venice and connections back to Hong Kong. More information can be found on the website, as well as on Facebook and Instagram.
