Exploring SUSTAINABLE DESIGN: TOSTEM's Commitment to Environmental Care at Architect '67
“Designing for Sustainability” is one of the key approaches to reducing environmental impact, allowing both businesses and consumers to actively participate in making sustainable design a reality. This includes choosing eco-friendly materials and equipment, designing products, and developing innovations that are environmentally conscious. Even the design of exhibition booths plays a crucial role in addressing issues by creating new pathways to reduce resource waste, opting for renewable resources or environmentally friendly materials, ensuring that functionality and aesthetics go hand in hand.

Similarly, the TOSTEM brand under LIXIL Corporation is focused this year on driving the brand with a core principle: bringing innovations to market that care for the environment, under the concept of “RE-CONNECTING LIVES,” or “doing business to bring residents closer to nature.” This is part of the mission “FRAMING THE FUTURE OF LIVING,” along with a vision for environmental sustainability by 2050 (Net-Zero 2050), aiming for zero carbon dioxide emissions (Net-Zero CO2 emission) and sustainable resource use. This includes design and production processes, recently showcasing the environmentally friendly aluminum innovation “PremiAL R100,” made from 100% recycled aluminum at the TOSTEM Thailand factory, certified by the EcoLeaf environmental label and JIC Quality Assurance Ltd. The production process is verified to ensure that only 100% recycled aluminum is used, with no new aluminum mixed in. Using recycled aluminum can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 97% compared to smelting new aluminum.

In addition to developing new innovations for the market, TOSTEM has demonstrated a serious commitment to driving an environmentally conscious brand. At the recent Architect '67 event, they reinforced the concept of sustainable design through their booth design, featuring SUSTAINABLE DESIGN principles. The design elements began with walls made from leftover aluminum scraps arranged to create semi-opaque walls, resembling a temple wall with protruding sections. The central wall can slide open into two parts to create an entrance to the TOSTEM product display area. The counter and internal walls utilized steel as the internal structure, while OSB plywood was used for the flooring and room walls, separating different zones for product displays and an internal café. The roof structure was made from corrugated cardboard, interlocking to serve as both a weight-bearing structure and ceiling, ensuring the lightest possible weight. The materials used included aluminum, glass, steel, OSB plywood, and corrugated cardboard, all of which were later processed for decomposition and recycling, such as returning aluminum scraps to the 100% recycling process at the factory. This allowed TOSTEM's booth this year to reduce waste generation by nearly 100% compared to the previous year's booth construction.

“TOSTEM has consistently created booths and campaigns to communicate with target audiences. Each year, the focus for TOSTEM is on sustainable design. The booth designs each year communicate the relationship between design, creativity, construction techniques, and the value of use to foster environmental responsibility and minimize waste. The goal is to maximize the reuse of all components, leading to the use of steel, wood, paper, and aluminum structures that can be disassembled for decomposition or recycling, making them easy to store and allowing for the creation of new booth structures that are always different.”

This booth design left a lasting impression and conveyed the perspective of sustainable design from the very first sight to visitors of TOSTEM's booth, receiving positive feedback from customers, architects, designers, and the general public, with over 12,000 visitors throughout the event, a 10% increase compared to last year. It effectively addressed the issues of sustainable design and environmental care. Those interested can experience sustainable window and door innovations in the environmentally conscious market of TOSTEM's 101 years.
