South Sukhumvit Coalition Collaborates with Phra Khanong District Office to Present 'Tree House 95' in Phra Khanong, Supporting the 15-Minute Park Policy
The South Sukhumvit Coalition, formed by a collaboration of government and private sectors in the Phra Khanong-Bang Na area, along with the Phra Khanong District Office, the Creative Economy Promotion Office, and local creative groups, is driving the Phra Khanong-Bang Na area towards becoming a hub of creative innovation. They are revitalizing and restoring the 'Tree House 95' in Phra Khanong, located on a 214 square meter plot at the end of Sukhumvit Soi 95. This vertical public space connects the community with nature and aims to serve as a model project in line with Bangkok's '15-Minute Park' policy.
Ms. Saitip Sukhanmanee, Director of Phra Khanong District, stated, "Public spaces are essential components that enhance the quality of life for citizens. Currently, open public spaces in Bangkok are quite limited, which led to the 15-Minute Park policy aimed at providing citizens with easy access to recreational areas near their homes. The district office recognizes that there are vacant lots in the South Sukhumvit area that can be transformed into public spaces for the benefit of the community. One such area is at the end of Sukhumvit Soi 95, which had been left abandoned until 2021 when a group of students and faculty from the International Program in Design and Construction for Community at Chulalongkorn University developed it into a vertical playground attached to a tree, allowing children to play safely. However, over time, the tree house fell into disrepair. The district office wishes to continue the original intent and has partnered with the South Sukhumvit Coalition to redevelop this area once again."
The development and improvement of 'Tree House 95 in Phra Khanong' is the result of collaboration among various sectors, starting with the Sukhumvit 95 Design Collective, which consists of community members and businesses in Sukhumvit Soi 95 working together to design and restore the original tree house, while also transforming the surrounding area into a play space that can accommodate various community activities. Additionally, the Department of Materials Engineering at Kasetsart University has collaborated to research and develop innovative concrete flooring materials made from waste ash to reduce the carbon footprint of construction materials and support solutions for urban waste by using waste as fuel for electricity production. Furthermore, the Thai Obayashi Corporation has contributed its construction expertise to build the surrounding fence for this public space.
'Tree House 95 in Phra Khanong' was officially launched after its renovation during the Bangkok Design Week 2024, held from January 27 to February 4. The South Sukhumvit area participated as one of the 15+ creative districts, showcasing the unique lifestyle of the area through various creative programs, with the tree house being one of the highlights. Two prototype activities were organized to help the community visualize the use of this public space, including a photo exhibition and furniture display titled 'Where We Were' by 85mm. Studio & House, and a discussion on food (Politics of Food) by Books & Belongings. After the conclusion of Bangkok Design Week 2024, Tree House 95 in Phra Khanong has become a public asset handed over to the community and local residents, especially children, for continued use.
Mr. Ongsa Janya Prasert, Director of the Cloud 11 by MQDC Project, a new hub for the creative industry and representative of the South Sukhumvit Coalition, stated, "Reviving and transforming the tree house back into a public space for the community enhances the quality of life for people, allowing them to access green spaces close to home. It also serves as a versatile area for various activities, providing a safe space for children to play and adults to relax and exercise, while promoting community interaction. This is another success for the South Sukhumvit Coalition in fostering collaboration among all sectors—public, private, and community (Public Private People Partnership)—bringing together diverse interests and capabilities to complement each other, driving Phra Khanong-Bang Na towards becoming a hub of creative innovation and developing South Sukhumvit into a truly inclusive city for everyone."
