UNHCR officials remain in both Syria and Turkey to coordinate the delivery of assistance in various areas following the earthquake. This funding will further support their efforts to effectively provide relief items such as tents, warm blankets, mattresses, and hygiene supplies to refugees and displaced persons affected by this disaster.
Currently, our world is facing the largest displacement crisis in history, with over 103 million people becoming refugees or displaced within their home countries. In 2021 to 2022, there were 40 emergencies in 29 countries, including Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Rohingya refugees, and forgotten crises such as Venezuela, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Central Africa, as well as the number of refugees and displaced persons affected by the severe earthquake in Turkey-Syria last February, complicating the displacement crisis and humanitarian assistance. UNHCR officials continue to work tirelessly on the ground to deliver as much aid as possible, and support from the private sector is crucial in enhancing the effectiveness of assistance, especially in responding to refugee crises in various emergencies.
Meanwhile, UNICEF is urgently working to assist children and families severely affected by this earthquake, reaching millions of children and families in need by delivering essential supplies such as hygiene kits, blankets, clothing, clean water, nutrition, vaccines, and medical supplies. Additionally, UNICEF has provided funding to repair thousands of schools damaged by the earthquake, alongside establishing child, youth, and family centers to ensure children have safe spaces to continue learning and receive psychological support, as well as accelerating efforts to reunite children separated from their families.
Today, children around the world are facing unprecedented crises, including war, conflict, pandemics, malnutrition, and disasters. UNICEF is working with partners in all areas, including the hardest-to-reach places, to provide humanitarian assistance to children and families in need, while aiming to improve their long-term quality of life, as the impacts of these crises often have lasting effects for years.
The support from MQDC is vital as it enables UNICEF to address the various needs of the increasing number of children and families in distress. This assistance will help them survive and thrive to reach their full potential.
