One Bangkok is a comprehensive real estate project with the highest quality standards and the largest in Thailand, located in the heart of Bangkok. With a design concept focused primarily on people, in collaboration with THINKK Studio, invites university students from all disciplines to submit designs for public seating that enhances urban living for the One Bangkok Urban Furniture Competition 2022 “Seatscape & Beyond,” with a total prize pool of over 500,000 Baht. Participants will also have the opportunity to join workshops and develop their designs alongside professional designers. Selected works will receive funding for production to be used in public spaces within One Bangkok.

Objectives
1. To create public seating designs that respond to various usage behaviors and enhance the experience of public spaces in One Bangkok.
2. To nurture emerging designers by providing a platform to showcase their potential through workshops and collaboration with professional designers, growing alongside the One Bangkok project.
3. To reinforce One Bangkok's vision of promoting and supporting a creative ecosystem and the country's creative economy.

Design Brief
Seatscape & Beyond invites diverse creative ideas for public seating designs that go beyond conventional seating. It may be a simple surface waiting to be filled with the imagination of users, a space that facilitates joy and fun in various dimensions, a place that reinterprets historical knowledge in a new light, or a design that integrates modern innovations and technologies for practical use. These are just a few possibilities we encourage participants to think about, analyze, and respond to the design challenge of public seating in One Bangkok through the interpretation of four seating contexts:
- Sit to Linger: Seating that allows for relaxation and exploration of the surroundings, discovering inspiration without the need to move.
- Sit to Play: Seating that encourages interaction and playfulness among friends or family members.
- Sit to Gather: Seating that invites people to come together and interact, whether through engaging conversations or shared meals.
- Sit to Transfer: Seating that occurs briefly during a purposeful transition from one point to another, serving as a welcoming and farewell space during a journey.

Entry Eligibility
1. Participants must be university students from any discipline.
2. Participants can join individually or in groups of up to 3 people.
3. Each group can submit more than one entry, but only one will be considered for the final round.
4. Groups can include members from different disciplines, such as design, architecture, engineering, psychology, and others.
5. Participants must be able to engage in all stages of the design process, including:

  • Design Concept Presentation
  • Design Workshop
  • Design Development
  • Technical Drawing for Production
  • Design Prototyping
  • Design Fabrication

Judging Criteria
1. Content – Research & Analysis (20%): The process of analyzing and connecting information on various aspects such as behavior, target groups, and context to create a compelling design brief.
2. Concept – Originality (20%): Establishing a design concept that promotes uniqueness and storytelling potential.
3. Context – Functionality & Suitability (20%): Practicality and appropriateness for the target audience, responding to usage behaviors and context.
4. Creativity – Aesthetics & Innovation (20%): Originality and artistic appeal, integrating innovations appropriately.
5. Consideration – Social & Environmental Issues (10%): Promoting sustainable environmental thinking and societal improvement through design choices and materials.
6. Communication – Storytelling (10%): Quality communication methods that effectively promote the work and meet submission requirements.

Schedule
1. Selection and Judging Period
February 5 - 15, 2022: Project information will be shared through an exhibition and prototypes at Bangkok Design Week 2022 (BKKDW2022).
March 1, 2022: Open for applications and submissions.
June 30, 2022: Final submission deadline.
July 18, 2022: Announcement of 20 shortlisted entries.
July 25, 2022: Shortlisted entries will present to the judging panel.
July 31, 2022: Announcement of 10 selected groups.
August 5, 2022: Selected groups confirm participation in workshops and development with THINKK Studio.

2. Workshop and Design Development Period
August 15 - October 31, 2022: Design workshop activities.
November 1 - December 31, 2022: Design development, technical drawing for production, and prototype creation.

3. Production and Installation Period
January - April 2023: Selected works from the 10 groups will enter the production process, with guidance from THINKK Studio and experts, meeting 1-2 times a month.
February 2023: Results from the workshop and design development will be showcased at Bangkok Design Week 2023 (BKKDW2023).
February 2023: The 10 selected groups will present their final works to the judging panel, and special awards will be announced, followed by an award ceremony and certificate presentation.
May - June 2023: The works of the 10 selected groups will be installed in public spaces within One Bangkok.

Prizes
1. The 10 selected groups will each receive a cash prize of 30,000 Baht and participate in workshops and design development with THINKK Studio and experts.
2. The best works after the workshop and design development will receive special awards as follows:

  • 1st Prize: 100,000 Baht, a certificate of honor, and support for production costs.
  • 2nd Prize: 60,000 Baht, a certificate of honor, and support for production costs.
  • 3rd Prize: 40,000 Baht, a certificate of honor, and support for production costs.
  • Honorable Mentions: Certificates of honor (7 awards) and support for production costs.
