Introducing Upcycled Plastic Materials in Real Estate Development
MQDC, an international real estate development company, in collaboration with GC, a leading chemical company, is introducing Upcycled innovations to develop construction materials from used plastics for use in all MQDC projects, reinforcing its mission to address the plastic waste problem in the country.
(June 27, 2018) Bangkok - Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited (MQDC) has partnered with PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC) to develop construction materials from used plastics for real estate development, with cooperation from Kasetsart University, Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, and the Research & Innovation for Sustainability Center (RISC). This collaboration was announced at the RISC Center, Magnolia Ratchadamri Boulevard.
“MQDC is committed to finding new ways to utilize upcycled materials from used plastics and various marine debris in our projects,” said Mr. Visith Malaisirirat, CEO of MQDC.
“The Upcycling innovation is a solution to the plastic waste crisis that Thailand is facing by transforming waste into new materials that can be used in various new forms without creating waste that returns to the plastic waste cycle. This plastic waste management strategy aligns with our philosophy of sustainable innovation for the well-being of all, which includes humans, animals, and all living things on this planet,” he added.
Mr. Visith further stated, “MQDC is the first real estate developer committed to using upcycled materials from plastic waste in all our projects worldwide. We hope that this collaboration between MQDC and GC will inspire the widespread use of these new materials in various forms.”
Ms. Warawan Tippawanich, Assistant Managing Director of Corporate Affairs at GC, stated that upcycled construction materials will be widely accepted in the future.
“GC operates under the principles of the Circular Economy, emphasizing the optimal use of resources and initiating the Upcycling Plastic Waste project, which transforms plastic waste into value-added materials, giving new life to plastic waste,” Ms. Warawan said.
“This collaboration marks an important step for GC into the real estate business, as upcycled materials will be widely used, sparking awareness and engagement in society due to their durability, strength, and environmental friendliness. We hope that other real estate developers will also be interested in using upcycled materials more,” she added.
Associate Professor Dr. Sing Intarachuto, head of the advisory committee at RISC and director of the Scrap Lab at Kasetsart University, who is spearheading the development of Thailand's Upcycle label, stated that this collaboration will create significant experiences for real estate development and help increase the recognition of upcycled materials in Thailand, as well as their application in design by the Scrap Lab at the Faculty of Architecture, Kasetsart University.
#Terraads “Upcycling innovation is about giving new life to waste by transforming it into new materials that can be reused in different forms. This is also a way to address the plastic waste crisis we are facing. Although fundamentally, solving this issue requires collective efforts to change consumption patterns and proper waste management,” said Associate Professor Dr. Sing.
“Under this collaboration, GC will work with communities to raise awareness about proper plastic waste management from the source and jointly develop processes to create new value from used plastics, while Kasetsart University, RISC, Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, and GC’s Customer Solution Center will collaborate to develop innovations for waste transformation. MQDC will use these materials in its projects. This collective effort will help create a new dimension in tackling plastic waste to restore the environment and protect our ecosystem,” Associate Professor Dr. Sing added.
Professor Prachum Kamputh, director of the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Management Unit at Rajamangala University of Technology, stated that this collaboration will make new materials derived from plastic waste a reality in the market.
“The tangible use of processed materials from plastics will enhance the effectiveness of addressing environmental impacts caused by consumption, as it requires less energy than traditional recycling methods,” Professor Prachum added, noting that these new processed materials are as strong as conventional construction materials but lighter.
Associate Professor Ratchada Chompunich, Vice President for Strategic Development and Corporate Communication at Kasetsart University, stated that this project will help raise awareness of plastic waste issues and encourage consumers to change their consumption behaviors.
“We can inspire consumers to adopt responsible consumption behaviors by finding new ways to manage plastic waste responsibly. Kasetsart University has also followed this approach by implementing the 'Green University' policy to conserve and restore our four campuses,” she said.
“Both consumers and residents in sustainable and beautiful environments created with Upcycled construction and decorative materials will be a driving force in promoting responsible consumption and waste disposal,” she added.
