MQDC Receives Global Sustainability Award as the First in Southeast Asia for WHIZDOM 101 Project
WHIZDOM 101, a Smart City project in Bangkok that combines condominiums, shops, office buildings, and recreational facilities, recently won an award for innovative design that promotes sustainability. The quality mixed-use project developed by Magnolia Quality Development Corporation (MQDC) entered the sustainability competition at the AEC Excellence Awards in Las Vegas and became the first project in Southeast Asia to receive this award. The sustainable design of WHIZDOM 101 has contributed to a 30% reduction in energy consumption and a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions by up to 15,000 tons per year, equivalent to the emissions from 3,000 cars on the road.
November 17, 2017, Las Vegas – WHIZDOM 101, a Smart City project on Sukhumvit Road developed by Magnolia Quality Development Corporation (MQDC), has gained international recognition for its advanced technology in project development aimed at reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact.
The WHIZDOM 101 project spans 43 rai (over 350,000 square meters) and includes condominiums, office buildings, shops, restaurants, recreational facilities, and green spaces, conveniently located near the Punnawithi BTS station. It received the second runner-up award for sustainability at the AEC Excellence Awards 2017, making it the first project in Southeast Asia to earn this prestigious recognition.
“The project's outstanding environmental focus arises from the integration of concepts to enhance green spaces,” said Mr. Suttha Ruangchaipiboon, President of Magnolia Quality Development Corporation (MQDC), the developer of WHIZDOM 101.
“The application of MQDC's sustainability concepts has allowed us to reduce energy consumption in the project by 30% through three key elements: the use of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and passive design, such as large green spaces or reducing internal temperatures,” Mr. Suttha added.
“The core idea of MQDC is ‘For all well-being,’ which drives us as a real estate developer to create projects that positively impact the environment and provide benefits to residents and surrounding communities. Additionally, the project's scale creates unprecedented positive environmental impacts, making it a place where people can live beyond just home and work, or a ‘third place’ as intended,”
The AEC Excellence Awards are supported by Autodesk, a global leader in 3D design software, including Building Information Modeling (BIM). WHIZDOM 101 was selected from a total of 145 projects competing from 32 countries worldwide. The AEC Excellence Awards results were announced during Autodesk University in Las Vegas, USA, from November 14 to 16, 2017.
Mr. Rama Tiwari, Director of Autodesk Southeast Asia, stated that WHIZDOM 101 stands out internationally in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) as well as sustainability by focusing on understanding people's needs and incorporating modern technology to minimize environmental impact.
“The AEC Excellence Awards have garnered global attention, and MQDC receiving this award will raise awareness of sustainability concepts worldwide,” Mr. Rama said.
“WHIZDOM 101, a quality mixed-use project from MQDC, is a testament to the use of BIM to connect sustainable and efficient design, making the future of the construction and architecture industry tangible,” Mr. Rama added.
Autodesk software has contributed to the WHIZDOM 101 project by enhancing energy conservation and sustainability through considerations of key factors such as natural wind circulation and drainage.
WHIZDOM 101 is designed under the concept of ‘The Great Good Place,’ serving as a residence, workplace, and social activity space. The project's energy-saving features include the use of a district cooling plant for efficient energy savings and alternative energy sources, including solar power and the Pavegen system that generates 5 watts of electricity per step on the walkway connecting the project to the Skywalk from the Punnawithi BTS station.
