Transport Ministry Advances Chiang Mai Electric Train Project Worth 100 Billion Baht
Proposes to the Cabinet to finalize the above-ground and underground electric train system for Chiang Mai with an investment exceeding 100 billion Baht
According to a report from the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP), preparations are underway to submit a report on the study and master plan for the development of public transport in Chiang Mai to the Ministry of Transport for approval in October-November this year, before presenting it to the Cabinet for consideration of the public transport system format. Two network options have been developed: Option A combines above-ground and underground routes with three main lines, totaling 35 kilometers, and an investment budget of 106.895 billion Baht. Construction is expected to take 6 years, with work anticipated to begin in late 2019 to early 2020 and completion expected between 2027 and 2028.
For Option B, which uses only above-ground routes, it consists of three main lines totaling 40.57 kilometers, with an investment budget of 28.419 billion Baht. This option is expected to take 3 years to construct, with work likely starting in late 2019 to early 2020 and completion expected between 2024 and 2025.
It is necessary to compare the advantages and disadvantages between the two networks and how they differ. For example, Option A uses both above-ground and underground routes.
The advantage is that it is suitable for the limited space in Chiang Mai, as it does not affect road surfaces and does not obstruct the city's views.
However, the disadvantage is the high investment cost, with a construction time of no less than 6 years.
Once the project study results are completed, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) will determine the investment format moving forward.
