Samsung Announces Partnership with Tesla to Showcase SmartThings Energy at CES 2024
Samsung has announced a collaboration with Tesla in the area of SmartThings Energy, featuring various products from Tesla such as the home battery system Powerwall, solar energy inverters (Solar Inverter), the charging system Wall Connector, and electric vehicles (EV). This partnership will be showcased at CES® 2024. This collaboration is made possible through Tesla's open API, which will enhance the already extensive connectivity of SmartThings Energy, further expanding its reach. It also contributes to Samsung's ultimate goal of providing consumers with a seamless and comfortable smart home experience.
Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President and Director of the IoT Development Team at Samsung's Device Platform Center, stated, "Tesla Energy customers will be able to manage and monitor their home energy status through SmartThings Energy, providing an additional channel beyond the Tesla app to ensure access to a wider range of connectivity. This new partnership marks another significant advancement for Samsung in extending our solutions beyond just home appliances."
The main benefit consumers will gain from this collaboration between Samsung and Tesla is that SmartThings Energy can connect with the Powerwall battery system, Solar Inverter devices, Wall Connector charging systems, and Tesla's electric vehicles. This will enable SmartThings Energy to display information regarding the production, storage, and usage of electricity for users.
Additionally, consumers will be better prepared for power outages or blackouts thanks to SmartThings Energy's ability to connect data with the “Storm Watch” feature of the Tesla app. This means that in the event of severe weather conditions, such as typhoons or heavy snowfall, users will receive alerts through SmartThings on their Samsung TVs and mobile devices, in addition to the Tesla app. Furthermore, they can activate the AI Energy mode both before and during a power outage to help extend the use of remaining backup energy in the Tesla Powerwall.

By utilizing Tesla's API in this way, Samsung is advancing its Net Zero Home initiative (homes that emit zero greenhouse gases) while enhancing the multi-device experience for SmartThings users.
Drew Baglino stated, "Tesla is excited to enhance the capabilities of our products to work with smart devices and other software in customers' homes. Recently, we released FleetAPI for developers to connect with Powerwall, Solar, and Wall Connector, in addition to our vehicles. We are pleased that Samsung has become one of the first developers to partner with us as a leader in smart home technology for consumers. Customers will be able to view the status of their connection to the power grid through multiple devices and control their home appliances intelligently to extend the energy in their Powerwall during outages."
The demonstration of SmartThings Energy connected to Tesla Powerwall is taking place for the first time at Samsung's booth at CES® 2024. However, the actual service is still in development and is scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2024, with the aforementioned features subject to change.
