ARV – AIS 5G Expands Collaboration in Wangchan Valley with New AI Autonomous Drone System for Real-World Industrial Applications
Since 2018, the ongoing collaboration between AIS 5G and PTT Group has focused on utilizing 5G and platforms as digital infrastructure to enhance operations in Wangchan Valley, developed by PTT Group and a key location for the Eastern Economic Corridor Innovation (EECi). This has been achieved through close cooperation with ARV, a Thai expert in robotics and artificial intelligence technology, under PTT Exploration and Production, to develop a platform for unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) for industrial use.

Today, we have elevated drone operations to the next level with the 5G AI Autonomous Drone System (Horrus), the first of its kind in Thailand developed by Thai expertise. This system incorporates AI technology, enhancing operational capabilities, and is the first drone to operate on an intelligent 5G network using Autonomous Network technology for agile network management. This allows for 24/7 security management in the smart city area of Wangchan Valley, which is equipped with Smart City infrastructure and a Regulatory & Innovation Sandbox for innovation development across four areas: unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous vehicles, energy innovation, and special frequency bands. This makes Wangchan Valley a prime location for future innovation development, transforming drone operations to play a significant role in the industry and reducing risks in hazardous or restricted areas.

Mr. Thanapong Ittisakulkai, Head of Corporate Customer Group at AIS, stated: "AIS aims to become a smart telecommunications technology organization or Cognitive Tech-Co through the Ecosystem Economy concept, fostering collaborative growth by working with diverse partners to promote digital transformation in the industrial and business sectors of the country. In particular, our collaboration with PTT Group as a Strategic Partner focuses on developing new technology innovations for various industries, including investing in digital infrastructure to support innovation development in the Wangchan Valley and EECi projects, making them centers for developing and testing solutions with a focus on practical applications."

The AIS engineering team has fully prepared the infrastructure, including the design of the 5G SA (Standalone) Network Architecture on the 2600 MHz band, utilizing the capabilities of Autonomous Network technology, which intelligently manages the system autonomously, and employs Network Slicing to meet the diverse network requirements of applications, along with MEC (Multi-access EDGE Computing) and the PARAGON Platform to support management and development of low-latency solutions. This serves as a 5G Testbed, an open area for Thai businesses and industries to develop practical solutions.

This marks another success for all teams involved, showcasing the capabilities of Thai individuals in developing an automated platform for drones by integrating AI technology and the capabilities of 5G for the first time, addressing the operational needs of the AI Autonomous Drone System (Horrus) developed by ARV in various aspects, ensuring stable and safe flight paths, and enabling intelligent operations for monitoring, receiving, and transmitting data including images, sound, and video back to the control center quickly and in real-time. This confirms AIS's commitment to harnessing the power of 5G to create new opportunities for the industrial sector and strengthen the country further."

Dr. Thana Sarawetpan, General Manager of AI and Robotics Ventures Co., Ltd. (ARV), a subsidiary of PTT Exploration and Production, added: "As experts in developing and providing robotics and artificial intelligence technology in Thailand, we aim to build expertise in AI and robotics to enhance infrastructure and support the well-being of people at all levels. The 5G AI Autonomous Drone System (Horrus) is another successful use case that is now operational in Wangchan Valley, which is well-equipped for testing due to the special regulatory relaxation for scientific and innovation trials, or UAV Regulatory Sandbox, and the readiness of the 5G digital infrastructure, which is a key technology used to develop this solution. This is the first time a Thai-developed intelligent drone has been created with AI as its core operating component using an intelligent wireless network."

5G and Network Slicing enhance data transmission speed, reduce latency in drone control commands, and support more stable remote control than radio and Wi-Fi signals. This collaboration with AIS elevates the operational potential of drones to the next level, allowing for automated operations along predetermined flight paths and schedules. Additionally, it can detect anomalies and send alerts back to the control center in real-time, improving efficiency in safety management and reducing risks in hazardous or restricted areas, such as using drones to inspect operations in factories or in areas exploring natural gas sources and natural gas separation plants within PTT Group's business. Therefore, this collaboration aligns with ARV's core mission and is crucial to the overarching goal of the Eastern Economic Corridor Innovation area, which aims to create a New S-Curve through innovation and digital technology.

ARV and AIS are ready to drive innovation development for organizations in the public, private, and industrial sectors to propel the transition to a sustainable digital era.
