               TerraBKK summarizes the data on tourist numbers in Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Chonburi based on the “Tourism Statistics 2014-2019” from the “Ministry of Tourism and Sports.” The details are as follows:

Chiang Mai 

              As a major tourist city in the northern region, TerraBKK found that Chiang Mai is the only province in the north with a monthly tourist count exceeding 100,000, generating over 2.7 billion baht in revenue for the province. The latest figures for 2019 (Jan-Jul) show over 5.75 million tourists.

              The majority of tourists in Chiang Mai are Thai, averaging 66%, with foreign tourists making up about 34%. The top 10 foreign nationalities visiting Chiang Mai in 2018 were:

  • USA 231,243 people
  • United Kingdom 195,559 people
  • France 159,311 people
  • Japan 147,394 people
  • Germany 122,639 people
  • Australia 105,255 people
  • Korea 101,706 people

              Foreign tourists in Chiang Mai spend an average of 4,490 baht per person per day, with the majority of spending going towards accommodation (28%), followed by food and beverages (20%), and shopping for souvenirs (19%).

              For accommodation and hotel data in Chiang Mai, the average occupancy rate is 76.02% (2018), with foreign tourists spending an average of 1,254 baht per person per day, staying an average of 2-3 days, with rooms accommodating 1-2 people.

Phuket

              Continuing to the south, Phuket is a major tourist destination that accommodates a large number of foreign tourists in Thailand. TerraBKK found that the latest figures for 2019 (Jan-Jul) show over 9.05 million tourists, with Phuket having the highest monthly tourist count in the south, generating over 31 billion baht in revenue for the province.

             

              The proportion of foreign tourists has steadily increased from 71% in 2014 to 73% in 2018, and most recently to 77% in 2019 (Jan-Jul). The top 10 foreign nationalities visiting Phuket in 2018 were:

              Foreign tourists in Phuket spend an average of 8,432 baht per person per day, with the majority of spending going towards accommodation (28%), followed by food and beverages (20%), and shopping for souvenirs (15%).

              For accommodation and hotel data in Phuket, TerraBKK found that the average occupancy rate is 75.96% (2018), with foreign tourists spending an average of 2,348 baht per person per day, staying an average of 3-4 days, with rooms accommodating 1-2 people.

Chonburi

              A tourist city not far from Bangkok, accommodating both Thai and foreign tourists. Over time, the proportion of Thai tourists has steadily increased from 32% in 2014 to 39% in 2018, and most recently to 45% in 2019 (Jan-Jul).

              TerraBKK found that Chonburi is the only province in the eastern region with a monthly tourist count exceeding 100,000, generating over 15 billion baht in revenue for the province. The top 10 foreign nationalities visiting Chonburi are:

              TerraBKK found that foreign tourists in Chonburi spend an average of 5,450 baht per person per day, with the majority of spending going towards accommodation (33%), followed by food and beverages (22%), and entertainment expenses (15%).

              Overall, the accommodation and hotel data in Chonburi shows an average occupancy rate of 79.56% (2018), with foreign tourists spending an average of 1,774 baht per person per day, staying an average of 2-3 days, with rooms accommodating 1-2 people. ---TerraBKK
