In the future, a 'good home' must be an innovation for living that provides a high quality of life for its residents, featuring designs and functions that cater to people of all ages and are as environmentally friendly as possible.

The organizing committee of the Sustainable Brands 2017 Bangkok (SB’17 Bangkok) conference, the third annual meeting where businesses, government, academia, and various organizations come together to exchange views that will help lead businesses and the country towards becoming sustainable brands, in collaboration with SCG, organized a visit to 'The NEST', a prototype Smart Eco-Care home that seamlessly integrates Smart Eco-Care technology. This aligns with the changing global Living Trend, considering the comfortable, safe, and environmentally friendly coexistence of people of all ages. The aim is to disseminate and exchange ideas on 'Redefining the Good Home', which is one of eight subtopics under the main theme 'Redefining the Good Life' of this year's SB’17 Bangkok conference.

During this visit to 'The NEST', we were honored to have Dayin Kiattikwanakul, New Business Development Manager, and Sarawan Pensuk, Design Consultant (Gerontologist) from SCG Cement-Building Materials Co., Ltd., join us for discussions at The NEST located in the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) in Pathum Thani recently.

Dayin Kiattikwanakul, New Business Development Manager at SCG Cement-Building Materials Co., Ltd., stated that on the occasion of SCG's 100th anniversary, the idea arose to create a Pilot House as a source of knowledge and ideas for customers, the general public, and researchers to study future homes that will meet the needs of residents in Thailand, which is about to fully transition into an aging society. This is a significant social issue concerning the elderly and disabled, including housing, which is a crucial agenda for the country. Therefore, SCG emphasizes the concept of Good Home in terms of good housing for the elderly, leading to the creation of The NEST, which stands for The Next Eco-Sustainable Technology for Home. It is a prototype designed to be a sustainable future home for living in a hot and humid climate, perfectly blending the concepts of Smart, Eco, and Care by integrating various technologies and systems, making it the first Energy Plus home in ASEAN.

'The NEST' is designed based on the concept of Passive Green that supports an Eco lifestyle, helping to save energy and water while being environmentally friendly. This includes Energy Generation, which can produce electricity for home use from solar cells; Energy Saving, which saves energy through building design that helps dissipate heat and reduce electricity consumption by integrating natural sunlight with the home's lighting system; and Water Saving, which optimizes water usage within the home, including recycling and utilizing rainwater and condensation from air conditioning units to use less water than typical homes.

Smart enhances operational efficiency and comfort in daily life with Intelligent Home Automation, a wireless control system for electrical devices and water within the home, including monitoring water and electricity usage to assist in household budgeting. Additionally, the Smart for Care system enhances safety and comfort for the elderly, even in the absence of caregivers. Care is designed to accommodate residents of all ages within the same home, reducing dependency for the elderly by preventing or minimizing accidents and enhancing comfort for the elderly to safely engage in various activities, allowing them to live happily with everyone in the home.

For this reason, SCG prioritizes creating housing that promotes good physical and mental health for the elderly and is committed to developing homes that are beneficial for the elderly in the future, based on the 7 dimensions of wellness, which include Intellectual, Spiritual, Career, Environment, Social, Emotion, and Physical, to enable the elderly to live independently for as long as possible and enjoy life without being a burden to their children.

Sarawan Pensuk, Design Consultant (Gerontologist) at SCG Cement-Building Materials Co., Ltd., emphasized that the most critical concern for the elderly is accidents from slips and falls. Statistics show that 1 in 3 elderly individuals will experience a fall, and 18% of those who fall will sustain injuries, with various fractures occurring among the injured, leading to high medical expenses. Therefore, SCG has innovated to reduce the occurrence of accidents as a priority, such as smart lighting systems that guide the way to the bathroom at night, enhancing safety, or handrails along walkways to reduce the risk of accidents. In case an accident does occur, there are shock-absorbing floor systems to help reduce impact both inside and outside the home.

SCG is one of the main sponsors of the Sustainable Brands conference, which serves as a hub for brand builders, marketers, and business leaders who prioritize responsible business practices and aim to create brands that contribute to sustainable development in society, with conferences held in various countries. One characteristic of Thai brands regarding sustainability is that we are a country that can effectively combine the concept of sufficiency economy with creative economy, comparable to any country in the world. We are confident that the SB’17 Bangkok event will be a platform for everyone to learn and share insights that will strengthen us all together. The theme of the SB’17 Bangkok conference presents the idea of 'Redefining the Good Life', encompassing 8 main topics, including Good Food, Good Home, Good Health-Care, Good Money, Good Design, Good Energy, Good Technology, and Good Destination.
