The Thailand Climate Business Network (ThaiCBN) has joined forces with the Department of Climate Change and Environment to enhance the operations of the ThaiCBN network by providing consulting and knowledge exchange, fostering collaboration among environmental networks in Thailand, and boosting the competitiveness of the business sector. This initiative aims to create opportunities in a low-carbon economy and sustainably enhance the country's competitive capabilities, promoting climate change actions in line with the country's new target framework (NDC 3.0) towards achieving Net Zero by 2050.

Dr. Pirun Sayasithpanit, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment stated that Thailand has elevated its greenhouse gas reduction targets under the NDC 3.0 (Nationally Determined Contribution) framework to lay the groundwork for transitioning to a low-carbon economy and accelerate the Net Zero goal by 2050, 15 years earlier than the original plan, to effectively mitigate the long-term risks posed by climate crises affecting both the economy and society.

However, driving NDC 3.0 remains a significant challenge for the country in terms of policy, technology, and investment. A domestic investment ratio of 70% and foreign support of 30% has been established, making the creation of strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors, such as the ThaiCBN network, a crucial mechanism for transforming “climate challenges” into “development opportunities” and sustainably enhancing the country's competitive capabilities.

Dr. Krint Boonleewanich, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Thailand Climate Business Network (ThaiCBN) revealed that the ThaiCBN network is a collaboration among government agencies, state enterprises, the private sector, academia, and the financial and banking sectors, established to systematically connect and elevate climate change operations. Currently, it comprises 37 leading organizations, including Kasikorn Bank, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, the National Innovation Agency (Public Organization), the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion, the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, and Central Pattana Public Company Limited, among others. The goal is to collectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 37 million tons of CO2 equivalent through three key mechanisms: developing best practices as a model for climate management, fostering collaboration among organizations and sectors, and enhancing the capacity of the country's workforce to support the transition of the business sector to a low-carbon economy, which will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the country's long-term competitiveness.

The collaboration between ThaiCBN and the Department of Climate Change and Environment aims to jointly promote the NDC 3.0 goal, driving Thailand towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 sustainably. This marks another significant step in the collaboration between the public and private sectors, following these working approaches:

1. Coordinate, exchange knowledge, and provide policy advice to projects within the ThaiCBN network to ensure they receive accurate information from experts and can successfully develop and improve.

2. Support the development of practices and joint activities at the network level, as the current environmental networks are scattered and may have overlapping roles. Therefore, the ThaiCBN network collaborates with the Department of Climate Change to gather and discuss practices with each network to ensure the most efficient operations to achieve the country's goals.

3. Enhance the adaptive capacity of the business sector to climate change by providing knowledge and tools to drive the business sector towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Driving the country towards achieving the NDC 3.0 goal requires cooperation from all sectors. This collaboration underscores the importance of uniting all sectors to effectively address climate change, turning challenges into development opportunities, and building a secure future for Thailand.
