Kasikorn Bank is focusing on Thai travelers visiting popular ASEAN countries such as Laos, Malaysia, and Vietnam, enabling them to spend without cash and enjoy the convenience of local spending through QR code scanning via the K+ Go Inter feature on K PLUS. This makes dining and shopping easier at restaurants, cafes, and famous street food spots. The use of the K+ Go Inter feature has increased, with transaction volumes in the second quarter growing by 34% compared to the previous quarter.
Dr. Pipatpong Posayanont, Managing Director of Kasikorn Bank, stated that the bank aims to develop stable and secure international payment services to meet the lifestyle needs of customers traveling abroad, who seek convenience in spending, whether shopping or enjoying local street food. Previously, travelers needed to carry cash to access local experiences, but with K+ Go Inter, tourists can spend easily like locals. The bank has observed continuous growth in QR payments, with transaction volumes in the second quarter of 2023 increasing by 34% compared to the first quarter, particularly in ASEAN countries like Laos, Malaysia, and Vietnam, due to changing travel behaviors that emphasize nearby destinations and cost-effective spending.
Thai tourists can use the K+ Go Inter feature on K PLUS to scan and pay at over 200,000 locations in Laos that display the LAO QR, UnionPay QR, and Alipay+ symbols, without needing to download additional applications or incur fees. This makes spending easy at restaurants, cafes, and street food vendors in tourist areas such as the Mekong Walking Street, the Mekong Market, the Morning Market in Vientiane, and the Luang Prabang Market. Consequently, the volume of transactions through Cross-Border QR Payment in Laos has significantly increased, with the bank currently holding over 59% market share in Laos and expecting continuous growth in customer spending through QR in 2023.
Malaysia and Vietnam are also popular destinations for Thai travelers, and K+ Go Inter facilitates local-like spending by simply looking for the Alipay+ and UnionPay QR logos. In Malaysia, payments can be scanned through the Alipay+ network, which covers over 2 million locations, and the UnionPay QR network, which has over 141,000 points nationwide. Similarly, in Vietnam, K+ Go Inter allows payments via UnionPay QR at over 100,000 locations across the country, usable in both large stores and local markets like Japan Alor Market in Malaysia and Ben Thanh Market in Vietnam.
K+ Go Inter enables customers to travel abroad without needing to exchange currency, avoiding fees, and ensuring a security level comparable to domestic transactions. Currently, it supports spending across over 40 countries worldwide, and transaction volumes through QR payments abroad are expected to surge in 2023 due to a growing emphasis on convenience and security in spending.
