One Bangkok Prepares to Unveil Permanent Public Art Installations by World-Class Artists Anish Kapoor and Tony Cragg, Elevating Bangkok as a Destination for Art and Culture
The countdown is on for One Bangkok, which is set to make a grand debut at the end of October under the theme 'The Heart of Bangkok'—a city built with heart. This initiative emphasizes the integration of art and culture into daily life to enhance the quality of life for its people, connecting every piece of art and program through the Art Loop, an art pathway that spans over 2 kilometers throughout the project.
Recently, One Bangkok is preparing to showcase works by world-renowned artists who have created landmark pieces, including Sir Anish Kapoor, one of the most celebrated sculptors of our time, known for his artistic finesse and engineering challenges. His famous public artworks include Cloud Gate or The Bean, a large sculpture located in Millennium Park in downtown Chicago, which has become a landmark art piece with its seamless, mirror-like surface that reflects the cityscape and its viewers.
Another notable work is Dismembermeant Site I in the Bay of Kaipara, New Zealand, featuring a large red PVC membrane stretching across the hillside. Alongside him is Tony Cragg, a leading British artist who explores the interaction between people and materials, revealing the limitless imagination of materials and forms in art. He is known for his acclaimed work Points of View, a series of significant sculptures scattered across public spaces worldwide, creating a unique identity as formless sculptures that play with perception, each contextualized differently based on location and viewer emotions. His work Early Forms reduces geometric shapes, which were once prominent in his early works, to mere abstractions and fluid forms that appear natural.
One Bangkok ignites life by bringing art closer to the public and propelling Bangkok to become a global destination for art and culture. It will present special sculptures from both artists as part of the One Bangkok Public Art Collection, a collection of public art distributed throughout the project, meticulously designed and selected to align with the lifestyle and aesthetics of One Bangkok.
The special public art sculptures from both artists have been curated and selected by Professor Dr. Apinan Poshyananda, a member of the art and culture committee for the One Bangkok project and the executive director and artistic director of Bangkok Art Biennale, to be permanently installed at One Bangkok. Additionally, these powerful sculptures have been chosen as significant parts of the upcoming Bangkok Art Biennale 2024 under the theme 'Nurture Gaia.'
Jarintip Chumuenwai, Chief Curator and Executive of Art and Culture, and Senior Director of Strategic Brand Communication and Public Relations for One Bangkok, stated: “We are immensely proud to present the world-class sculptures of Anish Kapoor and Tony Cragg. These powerful sculptures will become important symbols of Bangkok, a destination that people from around the world want to see for themselves. They will be a significant driving force for Bangkok and Thailand to play a more prominent role in the global art and culture scene. One Bangkok values and believes that art and culture will help enhance the quality of life for everyone. The One Bangkok Public Art Collection features public artworks from both world-renowned and local artists, accessible to everyone at no cost, showcasing a variety of forms including sculptures, paintings, digital art, and public furniture, all curated and designed to fit the context of One Bangkok, serving as both aesthetics and inspiration in daily life while connecting all elements of the project together.”
“We view art as a fundamental necessity, essential for living. The concept of 'The Heart of Bangkok' is to be a city that 'cares' for everyone in every detail. To make art and culture central to everyone, it must be seamlessly integrated into daily life and truly accessible,” Jarintip added.
Prepare to experience the sculptures from these two world-class artists for yourself at One Bangkok in the fourth quarter of 2024.
