CPAC Green Solution has showcased the CPAC Ultra Bridge Solution, the thinnest concrete bridge in Thailand and ASEAN, winning the prestigious “The ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards 2022” in the Infrastructure category from the United States. This reinforces its leadership in construction innovation, reducing environmental impact, and inspiring Thai engineers and architects. The company collaborates with professional engineering organizations and leading universities to elevate the Thai construction industry to international standards.

Mr. Chana Poomi, Vice President – Cement and Green Solution Business of SCG, revealed that previously, CPAC Green Solution submitted a construction project using UHPC (Ultra-high Performance Concrete) technology to the Concrete Association of Thailand and won a gold medal. Subsequently, the association submitted this project to compete in The ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards 2022, organized by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) in the United States, where it won first place in the Infrastructure category among submissions from concrete associations worldwide.

“This award is another source of pride for SCG and CPAC Green Solution as a leader in environmentally friendly construction innovation. This award guarantees that our UHPC (Ultra-high Performance Concrete) technology is an internationally recognized innovation that effectively addresses engineering challenges, is economically viable, environmentally friendly, and meets aesthetic design requirements, inspiring engineers and architects while elevating Thai construction to meet or exceed international standards,” Mr. Chana stated.

The highlight of the CPAC Ultra Bridge Solution innovation is the construction of a bridge using UHPC (Ultra-high Performance Concrete) technology, which is high-performance concrete designed to solve structural engineering issues for arch bridges constructed at SCG's headquarters. Due to height limitations, the foundation had to bear significant thrust forces, necessitating a larger foundation, which significantly increased construction costs. Therefore, the design was changed to a cantilever system extending from both sides to transfer the thrust forces to the foundation, using UHPC to withstand bending forces in the bridge's structural beams. This innovative concrete does not require steel reinforcement, allowing the bridge to be thinner and stronger, capable of supporting up to 500 kilograms per square meter, with the thinnest section of the bridge being only 30 centimeters thick, while the structural deck at its thinnest point (excluding architectural work) is only 2.5 centimeters thick, making it the thinnest concrete bridge in Thailand.

Additionally, a high-performance machinery system has been developed, along with concrete strength-enhancing additives, and an Internet of Things (IoT) system has been designed and installed to monitor the health of the bridge, allowing for ongoing assessment of structural integrity throughout its lifespan. Importantly, the construction using UHPC technology reduces carbon emissions by at least 20% and can extend the lifespan of the structure to over 100 years.

Mr. Chana continued, “In addition to bridge construction, CPAC Green Solution is working to further develop UHPC technology by collaborating with stakeholders to transition several infrastructure projects from prestressed concrete or structural steel to UHPC structures, aiming to reduce overall construction costs, shorten construction time, require less labor, and create highly durable structures that need less maintenance, while also reducing carbon emissions in construction to elevate the Thai construction industry towards sustainability, following SCG's ESG 4 Plus guidelines (focusing on Net Zero – Go Green – Lean – Equity – Collaboration under fairness and transparency). Over the past year, CPAC Green Solution has presented and educated various agencies, both public and private, about UHPC technology, its background, and benefits. Additionally, the company has collaborated with the Concrete Association of Thailand, the Engineering Institute of Thailand, and several leading universities to create a manual on design standards for UHPC technology to enhance understanding among stakeholders and promote the development of the Thai construction industry to meet international standards.”
