MRTA Signs Construction Contract for the Purple Line (Tao Pun - Rat Burana) to Begin Construction This Year
Today (March 11, 2022), Mr. Pakapong Sirikhantharamas, Governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), presided over the signing ceremony of the construction contract for the civil works of the Purple Line project, section Tao Pun – Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road) between MRTA and the contractors for all 6 contracts. Representatives included Mr. Watchara Saenghatthawattana from Ch. Karnchang Public Company Limited, Mr. Prasert Kongkhaoraptham from Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited, Mr. Thoranit Kransut from Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, Mr. Pholpath Kransut from Nawarat Patanakarn Public Company Limited, and Mr. Prasong Suwiwatthanachai from Unique Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited, at Meeting Room 2, 9th Floor, MRTA Office Building.

Additionally, an Integrity Pact was signed for the Purple Line project, section Tao Pun – Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road) between MRTA, the contractors for all 6 contracts, and observers under the Integrity Pact to ensure transparency and fairness. The selection process for the civil works contractors was conducted strictly in accordance with relevant laws, regulations, and other guidelines, following the policies of the government and the Ministry of Transport.
Details of the signed construction contracts for the civil works of the Purple Line project, section Tao Pun – Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road) include:
Contract 1: Design and construction of the running tunnel and underground station from Tao Pun – National Library with a budget of 19,430 million baht (including Provisional Sum and 7% VAT). This includes the design and construction of the underground railway from Tao Pun to the National Library, approximately 4.8 kilometers long, twin tunnels 16 - 35 meters deep, 3 underground stations, 2 ventilation shafts between stations, civil works, structural works, architectural works, station systems, and other works. The contractor for Contract 1 is CKST-PL JOINT VENTURE (comprising Ch. Karnchang Public Company Limited and Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited).
Contract 2: Design and construction of the running tunnel and underground station from National Library – Phan Fa with a budget of 15,878 million baht (including Provisional Sum and 7% VAT). This includes the design and construction of the underground railway from the National Library to Phan Fa, approximately 2.4 kilometers long, twin tunnels 23 - 46 meters deep, 3 underground stations, 1 ventilation shaft between stations, civil works, structural works, architectural works, station systems, and other works. The contractor for Contract 2 is CKST-PL JOINT VENTURE.
Contract 3: Design and construction of the running tunnel and underground station from Phan Fa – Buddha Bridge with a budget of 15,109 million baht (including Provisional Sum and 7% VAT). This includes the design and construction of the underground railway from Phan Fa to Buddha Bridge, approximately 3.1 kilometers long, twin tunnels 22 - 41 meters deep, 2 underground stations, 3 ventilation shafts between stations, civil works, structural works, architectural works, station systems, and other works. The contractor for Contract 3 is ITD – NWR MRT JOINT VENTURE (comprising Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited and Nawarat Patanakarn Public Company Limited).
Contract 4: Design and construction of the running tunnel and underground station from Buddha Bridge – Dao Khanong with a budget of 14,982 million baht (including Provisional Sum and 7% VAT). This includes the design and construction of the underground railway from Buddha Bridge to Dao Khanong, approximately 4.1 kilometers long, twin tunnels 17 - 28 meters deep, 2 underground stations, 5 ventilation shafts between stations, civil works, structural works, architectural works, station systems, and other works. The contractor for Contract 4 is Unique Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited.
Contract 5: Construction of elevated railway structures and stations from Dao Khanong - Khu Nai at the Electric Train Parking Building (Stabling Yard) and Park & Ride Building with a budget of 13,095 million baht (including Provisional Sum and 7% VAT). This includes the construction of the elevated railway from Dao Khanong to Khu Nai, approximately 9.0 kilometers long, 7 elevated stations, civil works, structural works, architectural works, station systems, and other works. There will be 4 Park & Ride facilities in Bang Pakok and Rat Burana, accommodating approximately 1,920 vehicles, and an electric train parking area near the Kanchanaphisek Ring Road. The contractor for Contract 5 is Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited.
Contract 6: Design and construction of the rail system along the project route with a budget of 3,589 million baht (including Provisional Sum and 7% VAT). This includes the design and construction of the rail system from Tao Pun to Khu Nai, which consists of the railway for the electric train and the rail system within the electric train parking area, installation of the running rails, power supply rails, and other works. The contractor for Contract 6 is Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited.
MRTA has set a timeframe for the construction of the civil works for all 6 contracts at 2,005 days from the date MRTA issues a Notice to Proceed (NTP) to the contractors. According to the plan, construction is expected to begin within 2022 and is anticipated to be open for public service by 2027. MRTA and the contractors for each contract will work together to carry out the construction project with full capacity to ensure progress according to the plan.
The Purple Line project, section Tao Pun - Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road), has a total length of 23.6 kilometers, consisting of 13.6 kilometers of underground structure with 10 stations and 10 kilometers of elevated structure with 7 stations. The route begins at Tao Pun Station, which connects with the MRT Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line (Purple Line) and the MRT Chaloem Ratchachak Line (Blue Line). There will also be stations connecting with other MRT lines to facilitate the travel of passengers, including Sam Yot Station connecting with the MRT Chaloem Ratchachak Line (Blue Line) and Phan Fa Station, which in the future will connect with the Democracy Monument Station of the Orange Line project (West) from Bang Khun Non to the Cultural Center of Thailand.
