"Sansiri" Becomes the First Thai Real Estate Company to Tackle Climate Change, Aiming for Net-Zero
"Sansiri" is advancing its green mission by announcing itself as the first real estate company in Thailand to set a Net-zero target, aiming to become an organization that emits zero greenhouse gases . Uniting efforts to address the global environmental crisis, the organization is driven by four pillars: ‘Process-Product-Partner-Investment’ that encompass carbon reduction in all dimensions, preparing to collaborate with environmental organizations to ensure transparency in all operational processes, and planning to invest 500 million baht in environmentally friendly energy, health, agriculture, and food technologies.
Mr. Srettha Thavisin, Chairman and CEO of Sansiri Public Company Limited (SIRI) revealed that climate change is becoming an increasingly pressing issue for us all, and it is a major problem for humanity, not just for any one individual. Both the public and private sectors, along with citizens, must collaborate urgently to ensure a sustainable world. As a leader in real estate, Sansiri has continuously prioritized this issue, setting business goals to create sustainable environmental change. Today, Sansiri reaffirms its important mission to become a cog in the wheel addressing the environmental crisis by announcing its goal to become the first real estate organization in Thailand to fully commit to achieving Net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the near future.
However, while various organizations have pushed for global cooperation, such as the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) held in November 2021, which reached a historic agreement to tackle environmental issues with the goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, this agreement can only be realized through the positive energy of all sectors working together seriously to address the crisis of global warming. This is evident from various signals affecting our world in recent years, including melting polar ice caps, heatwaves in Europe, wildfires in Australia, and severe flooding due to unusually heavy rainfall in many countries. Additionally, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has reported that global carbon dioxide emissions have increased every year, with the exception of 2020 when emissions decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic that halted the economy. However, the IEA predicts that in 2021, carbon dioxide emissions will have nearly returned to 2019 levels.

For Sansiri and the real estate ecosystem, the focus is on the overall design process of housing and controlling waste emissions that harm the planet. Sansiri has developed a strategic driving process in four main areas to become Thailand’s First Real-Estate Company to Set Target for Net-zero, aiming for business, social, and environmental sustainability which is packed with details as follows:
Process: Sansiri will implement rigorous and standardized verification processes, establishing achievable goals. Starting with joining the Thailand Carbon Neutral Network, established by the Greenhouse Gas Management Organization, and then participating in the TCOP9 carbon offset project to support the domestic voluntary carbon market in its 9th year, which will help identify emission sources and assess greenhouse gas emissions in projects and all operational processes of Sansiri, ensuring tangible and measurable outcomes.

Product: Sansiri aims to develop more environmentally friendly housing projects, focusing on clean energy use, valuable resource utilization, and waste reduction. All projects by Sansiri must use clean energy starting from 2021 onwards, with all common areas of new projects featuring solar roofs, and all newly launched Sansiri homes will have solar roofs, with over 50% and 100% for every unit by 2030. Additionally, streetlights in all new Sansiri projects will use 100% solar energy by 2030 as well (currently, lighting in common areas of all new projects is powered by 100% solar energy).
Using clean energy vehicles by converting all executive vehicles of the company to EVs in early 2021 and installing EV chargers in all projects by 2025, including in every home by 2030.
Using environmentally friendly materials starting with 50% in 2022 and increasing to 70% by 2025 of the materials purchased by Sansiri, along with aiming for energy-efficient homes whereby by 2025, 50% of new Sansiri homes will be Cooliving Designed Homes, increasing to 70% by 2030, and all Sansiri homes must use energy-saving appliances rated 5 and LED light bulbs.
Furthermore, construction in all projects must effectively reduce waste with construction waste to be recycled and reused at 70% by 2025, and the production process of precast factories must generate no more than 2% waste by 2022. Importantly, every Sansiri project must have a Waste Management system to reduce carbon and waste with every project required to have waste separation bins (Waste to Worth) and a goal to partner with others to improve waste separation efficiency.

Partners: Positive partners Sansiri has collaborated with partners to seriously set greenhouse gas reduction targets to work together. Currently, there are many large organizations participating as partners, such as TOA, Cotto, Daikin, SB Furniture, Unilever Thailand, Coca-Cola (Thailand), Siam Cement Group, BCPG Public Company Limited, GC, etc., and discussions are ongoing with financial institutions to create special loans (Pre & Post Finance) with favorable interest rates for environmentally friendly projects. In the future, all partners in Sansiri's ecosystem will be encouraged to sign a cooperation agreement on Net-zero together.
Investment: Investment in all dimensions will focus on businesses directly and indirectly related to carbon reduction, with an initial investment budget of 500 million baht over three years, emphasizing investments in clean energy technology, health technology, agricultural technology, and food technology, all of which must be environmentally responsible and socially friendly.
“Sansiri's model will be another driving force towards a low-carbon industry to support Thailand in achieving the Net Zero target set for the global community. We at Sansiri commit to undertaking this mission seriously and urgently through four dimensions: Process- Product – Partners – Investment to reach the goal of Thailand’s First Real-Estate Company to Set Target for Net-zero or the first Thai real estate company to boldly declare a concrete Net-zero target through rigorous and standardized verification processes, using clean energy, valuing resources, and being environmentally friendly, collaborating with Sansiri's positive partners, and investing in businesses related to direct and indirect carbon reduction to ensure that all of Sansiri's operations will be powered by clean energy and be as environmentally friendly as possible, helping to raise societal awareness of the need for participation in solving the environmental crisis that everyone can contribute to, starting from homes, which are the small units that serve as everyone’s residence, to collectively create significant change for our world.”
