LIXIL, a pioneer in housing and sanitary products, has launched the American Standard Design Award (ASDA) 2022, a design competition aimed at connecting the design community across the Asia-Pacific region to create functional designs that meet user needs, inspired by emerging designers.

The core of ASDA is to align purposeful and thoughtful design to elevate hygiene standards while providing solutions that address the ever-changing needs of consumers, from maximizing space utilization to enhancing comfort. This year's competition theme is Purposeful Design - Transforming the Way We Live.

This design competition offers young designers the opportunity to showcase their creativity, emphasizing a consumer-centric design philosophy that is central to the brand's commitment to delivering bathroom solutions that meet user needs, combined with well-crafted designs and cutting-edge technology. The ASDA competition focuses not only on appealing aesthetics but also on integrating functionality that addresses everyday challenges thoughtfully and effectively.

Antoine Besseyre Des Horts, Leader of LIXIL Global Design, Asia, stated, "As one of the key global brands under the LIXIL group, American Standard has a legacy of quality and innovation spanning over 140 years. Under the brand's innovative bathroom design philosophy, we aim to create a space for designers to collaborate and present their designs on the ASDA stage, hoping to foster a community that breaks creative boundaries and drives design ideas that meet the demands of a constantly evolving world."

The ASDA 2022 competition in Thailand features two categories: the Student League and the Professional League. Student participants must be enrolled in architecture or related design programs, starting from their second year. The winning student will represent Thailand in the regional Asia-Pacific (APAC) competition alongside winners from seven other countries: Australia, Cambodia, India, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam, competing for the Grand Prize.

In terms of competition rules, participants in both the Student League and Professional League must present bathroom design proposals that align with the specific criteria set by the judges, as follows:
• Category 1: Residential Bathroom Space Design – Condominium (High-Rise) Bathroom
Concept: Urbanization
The growth of urban society has led to smaller living spaces, prompting homeowners to seek ways to maximize the functionality of their bathrooms.

• Category 2: Hospitality Bathroom Space Design – Boutique Hotel or Resort Bathroom
Concept: Health & Well-Being
The New Normal has made people more aware of the importance of health and hygiene standards when using shared facilities. Therefore, hotel bathroom designs must consider these aspects to ensure guests can relax and use the facilities with peace of mind.

Participants in both the Student League and Professional League can choose to submit designs in either category or both. The competition specifies a mandatory product, which is the Studio S toilet that all participants must incorporate as a key element in their designs.

Audrey Yau, Leader of LIXIL (Thailand) Public Company Limited, Asia Pacific Water Technology Business Group (LWT APAC), stated, "The decision to select the Studio S toilet as the mandatory product for this bathroom design competition is due to its recent market introduction and its distinctive design featuring a one-piece toilet without a tank and a countertop-mounted sink with an oval shape, providing a modern feel. This presents a challenge for participants to create something new that has not been done before in the market, aligning with the competition's concept that emphasizes urban lifestyles with limited space. Therefore, the design must not compromise usable and working areas, while also adapting to the New Normal, reinforcing the importance of improved health and hygiene standards, which remains a crucial aspect that participants must address thoughtfully while highlighting the product's features clearly."

The American Standard Design Award (ASDA) Asia Pacific 2022 national round has the honor of having esteemed design professionals as judges, including IDIN Architects, Architects 49, PIA Interior, P49 Design & Associates, Dsign Something, and experts from LIXIL Thailand, to identify the best designers and university-level talent in the country, paving the way for them to compete at the Asia-Pacific level. The judging panel will carefully select and evaluate entries with the goal of representing the best national works in competition with other countries and bringing home prestigious awards for Thailand, with a total prize pool exceeding 800,000 baht throughout the competition.
