"SCG Chemicals" is a leading integrated chemical producer in Thailand and a major player in the Asia region that is advancing environmentally friendly plastics in line with its business approach of "Sustainable Petrochemicals," consistent with ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles.

Recently, it has joined forces with Braskem (Braskem) the global leader in bioplastics from Brazil, by signing a memorandum of understanding to explore the feasibility of investing in a bioplastic production facility in Thailand to produce bio-ethylene , which will be used to manufacture bio-based polyethylene to meet the growing demand for bioplastics in Asia and the global market, while also promoting the use of environmentally friendly plastics among green-conscious consumers.

Mr. Roger Marcioni Braskem's Director for Asia stated that the global trend is increasingly demanding solutions that address circular economy and sustainability. Therefore, Braskem is looking for opportunities to offer environmentally friendly plastics under the brand I’m GreenTM, which is bio-based polyethylene, to help care for the planet while meeting the needs of environmentally conscious customers. Additionally, it aims to become a net-zero carbon organization by 2050.

Our collaboration with SCG Chemicals marks an important first step in Asia, as both organizations share aligned sustainability goals. We will work together to study, exchange expertise, and accelerate the development of bioplastic technologies and innovations.

Mr. Tanawong Areeratchakul, President of SCG Chemicals stated that SCG Chemicals has a clear direction towards sustainable petrochemical business. One of the key strategies is to accelerate entry into the circular economy to maximize resource utilization, reduce global warming, and meet the needs of environmentally conscious customers, brand owners, and consumers.

The signing of the MOU with Braskem, a global leader in bioplastics, aims to explore the feasibility of a joint venture to build a bioplastic production facility in Thailand, which will address the global trend of environmental consciousness, help reduce global warming, and enable us to move towards a tangible "sustainable petrochemical business" in line with ESG principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as align with the government's BCG Model policy to create added value for Thailand's economy.

If the feasibility study proceeds well and both parties reach an agreement, the construction of the bioplastic production facility will take place in the Map Ta Phut area of Rayong province. This project will combine Braskem's expertise in bioplastic technology with SCG Chemicals' expertise in polyethylene production and marketing excellence to further promote the use of environmentally friendly plastics.
