EGAT Partners with the Marine Department to Sign MOU for Research and Development of Rama 5 and Rama 7 Ports into Smart Ports, Promoting Innovation for Transportation Benefits

Today (July 16, 2020), Mr. Viboon Rerk-sirathai, Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on academic collaboration and innovation development with Mr. Witiya Yamong, Director-General of the Marine Department. This partnership aims to research and develop smart ports, starting with Rama 5 and Rama 7 ports, over a period of three years with a budget of approximately 19 million baht at the EGAT Learning Center, Nonthaburi.

Mr. Witiya Yamong, Director-General of the Marine Department, stated that the Marine Department, as the main organization overseeing and promoting the development of water transport and maritime trade systems, has a policy to modernize the ports along the Chao Phraya River in the Bangkok area to enhance water travel and open doors to cultural tourism around the Rattanakosin Island. This collaboration marks a significant step towards elevating the standards of Thailand's water transport system.

Mr. Viboon Rerk-sirathai, Governor of EGAT, mentioned that EGAT and the Marine Department will jointly study and develop the ports. EGAT will design and implement suitable technology to transform the ports into modern, clean, and safe smart ports with various facilities that cater to all user groups. The initial improvements will focus on Rama 5 and Rama 7 ports, which are major ports in Nonthaburi near EGAT's headquarters. The combined expertise of both organizations will enhance the country's transportation and energy management, aligning with the Smart City policy that emphasizes the use of modern innovations and technologies to promote sustainable economic, social, and environmental development.

The development plan for the smart ports will include landscape improvements designed based on architectural identity from the respective eras, alongside energy-saving design concepts. Facilities will include directional signage for public transport connections, ramps for persons with disabilities, and smart restrooms that are clean and efficiently manage water resources, as well as charging stations for mobile devices and free Wi-Fi. The concept of the port is not solely for transportation but also aims to provide shared benefits for the general public.
