It has been almost a month since COVID-19 changed our lifestyle. Going outside has become a challenge, leaving many feeling uncomfortable and restless as they stay home all the time. This is especially true for those transitioning from commuting to an office job to walking from their bed to their desk.

When Work from home leads to Work Life Unbalance
The boundaries between home and work have blurred to the point where they are almost indistinguishable, resulting in accumulated stress without us realizing it. We feel burnt out and less productive than before. Therefore, it is crucial to quickly reorganize ourselves.

  • Maintain Work Life Balance by taking real breaks

According to the book ‘Work Life Balance through Real Breaks’ by Associate Professor Dr. Masaki Nishidama, a lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at Waseda University in Japan, it discusses the psychology of maintaining a balance between work and rest. After countless consultations with patients, it concludes that true Work Life Balance is about effective rest to recharge energy for tackling work ahead.

  • Make every day feel like you are still going to the office

Try to keep your daily routine as similar as possible, from waking up, getting out of bed, showering, dressing up, and walking to your desk ready to work. This reinforces your consciousness that you are crossing the boundary from rest to work, which helps clarify the boundaries between work and home.

  • Clearly define Blue zone and Red zone

It wouldn’t be good if we had to respond to emails at the dining table, work on the sofa, talk to clients in front of the TV, or have distractions during work hours. This means we are fully accepting our workspace into our relaxation area. Therefore, it is essential to create a clear separation between your work zone and family activities.

Besides working, staying at home can lead to boredom, especially when we have done everything possible, whether it’s exercising, cooking, watching Netflix, binge-watching series, reading, taking online classes, or playing TikTok. We need to find other activities to prevent our time at home from becoming dull.
