Sansiri is pioneering the establishment of a New Normal in Waste Management for its residential projects, enhancing measures for managing medical waste during COVID-19, reinforcing its image as a leader in environmental sustainability in the Thai real estate sector.

  • Sansiri promotes the management of medical waste as the New Normal in Waste Management within its residential projects, serving as a model for safe and sustainable waste separation in the Thai real estate industry.
  • The company is increasing the number of medical waste bins in its projects and implementing strict measures to transfer medical waste to the Pollution Control Department, anticipating over 110,000 used face masks per month in the T77 Community, totaling over 2 million pieces across Sansiri projects nationwide.
  • During the Work from Home period and increased time spent at home due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the disposal of plastic boxes, plastic bags, and cans from food delivery has surged by 10,000 kilograms per month in the T77 Community, making proper waste management and recycling essential to reduce pollution.
  • Sansiri is preparing to elevate its Sansiri Green Mission to Sansiri Sustainability after successfully reducing carbon monoxide emissions by over 90 percent within a year, from a three-year target.
  • In 2020, the company intensified its Waste Management mission across projects, organizations, and construction sites.

Ms. Jariya Janjerdsuk, Assistant Managing Director of Product Development at Sansiri Public Company Limited, stated, "The COVID-19 situation has led many organizations to adopt Work from Home policies, resulting in significant changes in lifestyle and an increase in household waste, particularly from food delivery, which has risen by 45 percent. Plastic and aluminum can recycling has increased by 10,000 kilograms per month. Therefore, as a leader in environmental sustainability in Thai real estate, Sansiri must implement effective waste separation measures and educate our residents to recycle efficiently. Recyclables will then be forwarded to relevant agencies to add value or manage them effectively to reduce pollution. Meanwhile, food waste will be sorted and converted into natural fertilizer using Food Waste Machines to minimize waste as much as possible."

Furthermore, Sansiri is preparing to set a new New Normal for waste management in residential projects, becoming the first real estate company in Thailand to implement concrete measures for managing medical waste. In March, there were 55,000 pieces of used face masks in the T77 Community, and it is expected to rise to 110,000 pieces in April, totaling over 2 million pieces across Sansiri projects nationwide during the COVID-19 outbreak. Sansiri has partnered with Plus Property Co., Ltd. to intensify measures for managing medical waste during COVID-19, starting with educating residents on the proper disposal of used face masks and providing training by the Pollution Control Department for property management to ensure strict medical waste management before it is sent to the Pollution Control Department and government agencies for safe handling.

“Given the current situation, which remains unpredictable, in addition to promoting waste separation at the source to minimize landfill waste, we recognize the importance of managing new types of waste arising from COVID-19. Therefore, we have classified used face masks and waste from quarantined residents as medical waste and established measures to manage them as the New Normal in Waste Management for Sansiri residential projects, serving as a model for safe and sustainable waste separation in the Thai real estate industry,” Ms. Jariya added.

Ms. Jariya also discussed the Sansiri Green Mission, stating that after announcing significant goals for environmental change and sustainability in the Thai real estate sector in 2019, Sansiri has already reduced carbon monoxide emissions by over 1,917 tons, or over 90 percent of the total target set for three years. The company has a clear stance on reducing and managing waste effectively while seriously studying residents' waste separation behaviors to find suitable waste separation methods. This includes reducing plastic bottle usage in the organization by 900,000 bottles, equivalent to 70 rai of green space, and switching from distributing drinking water in plastic bottles to serving infused water in paper cups at sales galleries.

“Sansiri has also collaborated with Coca-Cola (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and the Faculty of Economics at Chulalongkorn University to conduct economic experiments aimed at fostering waste separation behaviors among residents in the T77 Community. The research findings will be integrated with Sansiri's studies to design new waste rooms and bins in all high-rise projects completed from 2020 onwards. Additionally, Sansiri has partnered with Plus Property to pilot recycling efforts, achieving a total of 16 tons of recyclables, equivalent to an average carbon monoxide emission reduction of 11.6 tons across 29 projects.”

Ms. Jariya concluded that this year, Sansiri is set to elevate the Sansiri Green Mission to Sansiri Sustainability to expand its efforts in environmental preservation and sustainable project development across all aspects, with a focus on Waste Management as a primary mission and promoting sustainable waste management in residential projects, organizations, and construction sites.”
