More Dangerous Than Expected! Researchers Find COVID-19 Virus Can Survive on Surfaces for 17 Days
The current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic has led many people to pay more attention to cleanliness, as the virus can be transmitted through droplets from infected individuals when in close proximity, as well as through contact with bodily fluids on various surfaces and then touching the face, allowing the virus to enter the body through the eyes, nose, or mouth.
However, what is even more alarming is the new information that has emerged indicating that the COVID-19 virus, officially known as SARS-CoV-2, can survive much longer than previously thought!
A research team from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) found data from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which had over 700 infected individuals, showing that the COVID-19 virus can survive on surfaces for up to 17 days after passengers have left their cabins.
The research team tested for the virus in uncleaned cabins of infected passengers, both symptomatic and asymptomatic, and discovered traces of the virus on various surfaces. In contrast, if the room had been cleaned or disinfected, the COVID-19 virus could be completely eradicated.
Additionally, previous studies by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Montana, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), indicated that the COVID-19 virus has varying survival times on different surfaces.
For instance, it can survive on cardboard for 24 hours, while on copper surfaces, it lasts only 4 hours. However, on plastic and stainless steel, it can remain viable for up to 3 days.
Moreover, the same research was able to detect the virus present in droplets even 3 hours after they were released from coughing or sneezing!
Therefore, to avoid becoming one of the COVID-19 infected, it is essential to protect oneself by wearing masks, washing hands thoroughly or using hand sanitizer, avoiding touching any objects and then touching the face, eating hot food, using personal utensils, not sharing items with others, and maintaining social distancing of at least 1-2 meters.
