Korat Residents Celebrate: Cabinet Approves Construction of 50-Kilometer Electric Rail System
December 26, 2018 - Mr. Putthipong Punnakanta, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the Cabinet has approved the draft principles of a royal decree allowing the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) to proceed with the procurement and operation of electric rail services in Nakhon Ratchasima province. Previously, the MRTA was only authorized to operate electric rail services in the Bangkok area. Initial studies indicate that a light rail system is necessary in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Initially, the project will cover approximately 50 kilometers, divided into three routes: the Green Line, approximately 20 kilometers; the Orange Line, approximately 20 kilometers; and the Purple Line, 7.1 kilometers, with a total of 30 stations. The budget for the project will be proposed by the relevant agencies for further consideration. The construction period is expected to take 5 years following the approval of the budget.
According to reports, the Ministry of Transport has assigned the MRTA to be responsible for the project, with the Green Line serving as the pilot project. The route will start from the Save One Market to Mukmontri Road, and then to the Nari Sawat Vocational Training Center, covering a distance of 11.17 kilometers. The process of issuing the royal decree to empower the MRTA to carry out the project in Nakhon Ratchasima is currently underway.
