75 Years of Success: The Engineering Institute of Thailand Launches 'National Engineering 2018' with a Grand Vision for Thailand 4.0
On the occasion of its 75th anniversary, the Engineering Institute of Thailand under the Royal Patronage (EIT) reaffirmed its potential and success in integrating engineering technology to support both the government and the business sector. The institute officially opened the 'National Engineering 2018' event, the largest engineering seminar and technology exhibition in Thailand, uniting over 100 exhibitors from various public and private sectors under the theme 'Engineering for Society; Smart Engineering, Smart Life, Smart Nation' - intelligent engineering for a modern life, leading to a future Thailand. This initiative aims to reform the country towards a knowledge-driven society, enhancing the capabilities of all sectors to elevate society towards a sustainable smart life and smart nation, thereby increasing economic competitiveness.
Dr. Thanet Veerasiri, President of the Engineering Institute of Thailand under the Royal Patronage (EIT), stated at the opening ceremony of 'National Engineering 2018' that the strategic plan for national reform driven by knowledge aligns with the Thailand 4.0 initiative, which aims to enhance the competitiveness of the industrial sector. This transition is from traditional industries to high-value and complex industries, or the New S-Curve, through five key technology and innovation groups that are essential for driving the country's economy. The EIT's mission is to promote and support the advancement of the engineering profession by developing knowledge, supporting research, improving standards, and creating beneficial activities for the engineering profession and society. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, the EIT is hosting 'National Engineering 2018' as the largest academic seminar and exhibition of engineering technology in Thailand, focusing on the development and elevation of engineering professional standards by showcasing advanced technologies and innovations from Thailand, while also providing a platform for exchanging and updating global engineering trends through over 89 seminar topics.

This year's grand event, 'National Engineering 2018', received collaboration from three ministries: the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, which provided knowledge to enhance the development of the engineering profession in line with national development plans. Special keynote speeches will reflect the significant role of engineering technology in driving the country towards knowledge-based progress and connecting with the global economy, in accordance with the 20-year national strategic plan, which aims for an investment of over 5 trillion baht, resulting in an average GDP growth of no less than 4.5% per year, including:
- The industrial strategic plan featuring a special keynote on 'Industry Transformation Thailand 4.0' by Dr. Somchai Harnhirun, Deputy Minister of Industry, on Thursday, November 1, 2018, from 09:00 to 10:00.
- The transport strategic plan featuring a special keynote on 'Transport Strategy: Nation Building' (Transforming Transportation) by Mr. Akhom Termpithya, Minister of Transport, on Thursday, November 1, 2018, from 13:00 to 14:00.
- The digital strategic plan featuring a special keynote on 'Digital Transformation according to the National Strategic Plan' by Mr. Phansak Siriratchatpong, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy and Society, on Friday, November 2, 2018, from 09:00 to 10:00.
Dr. Tosaporn Sriaem, Chairman of the National Engineering 2018 event stated that 'National Engineering 2018' marks the 13th consecutive year of this event. This year, it has gathered over 100 exhibitors showcasing technology products from various professions. Highlights of the event include updates on new knowledge trends across various topics, such as innovations in building safety, featuring a Japanese engineer discussing building design in unpredictable situations such as terrorism, bomb threats, and arson, which are new topics for Thailand. Additionally, there will be knowledge sharing on fire prevention for large buildings, such as airports and skyscrapers, from the National Fire Protection Association of the United States.
Furthermore, there will be presentations and seminars of interest for engineers and the public, such as 'Smart City', which integrates innovations and technologies to enhance convenience, savings, and safety in daily life. Thailand is set to develop new Smart Cities in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) regions, including Rayong, Chachoengsao, and Prachinburi, linking the digital world through smartphones and other devices, such as the PEA Hive Platform application for controlling electrical appliances, route and traffic surveys, online trading systems, etc. Future developments will include innovations in future vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs), solar energy usage, and the use of robots to replace human labor in the industrial sector, as well as managing big data (Data Center and CLOUD Technology).
The event will be divided into four zones:
- Academic Seminar Zone featuring over 89 interesting seminar topics related to the advancements in the engineering profession as a driving force for the government's New S-Curve reform, along with an International Forum for knowledge exchange and updates on engineering trends from experts and engineers worldwide. Key highlights include special speeches from ministers of the three ministries: the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society.
