If there are elderly people in your home, you might often hear complaints from grandparents about neck and back pain. But how many people truly understand the causes and the correct ways to treat it?

Causes There are three main causes of neck and back pain:

 1. Poor posture Many people have daily routines that require them to maintain certain positions for extended periods, leading to muscle tension and pain. Examples include working at a computer, sleeping on a pillow that is too high or too low, sewing, or playing golf.

 2. Injuries to the neck and back such as a neck sprain caused by abnormal and rapid muscle movement, which can lead to torn ligaments, or injuries from falls, physical assaults, or accidents.

 3. Degenerative joint conditions due to wear and tear from birth to old age result in the deterioration of bone joints. This condition can occur at any age but is more common in the elderly.

Treatment can be done by taking pain relief medication or undergoing physical therapy to strengthen the muscles in the affected area, such as:

 • Exercise 1: Slowly lower your chin to your chest, then lift your head back up slowly to the maximum position.
 • Exercise 2: Keep your head straight and slowly tilt to the left, trying to touch your left shoulder with your ear without raising your shoulder. Do the same on the right side.
 • Exercise 3: Slowly turn your head to the left so that your chin aligns with your left shoulder, then turn your head back. Repeat on the right side.
