Who can blame millennials or Gen Y for being unmotivated? Whether it's due to their lack of effort or the encroachment of technology that has alarmingly replaced human labor, it's easy to point fingers. However, for Jack Ma , the billionaire founder of Alibaba, China's giant e-commerce platform, the real villain causing Gen Y to sit in despair, unable to find jobs today, is the current education system. He argues that it continues to produce graduates who compete against machines that possess superior precision. If the education system remains stagnant over the next 30 years, the workforce should prepare to be obsolete.

At the Bloomberg Global Business Forum in New York City, Jack Ma made significant waves in the global education sector by dismantling outdated beliefs that have persisted for 200 years—that industries create jobs. He urged society to awaken to the reality that the world has changed; industries are no longer the primary source of employment. With the rise of artificial intelligence and robotics in industrial systems, even small businesses can achieve growth comparable to large corporations simply by leveraging the internet or social networks.

“From now on, when we talk about production, the terms 'made in the USA' or 'made in China' will become obsolete because modern production will happen on the internet (Made in Internet).”

Given this, Jack Ma expresses deep concern about the lack of an education system capable of preparing the new generation for future labor markets.

“The current education system will leave children unemployed in 30 years because humans cannot compete with machines. A simple comparison is in calculations; ultimately, machines perform better. Therefore, since we cannot teach our children to compete with smarter machines, we must teach them to do things that are unique. We need to encourage the new generation to be creative and think innovatively.”

Despite the anxiety surrounding the rise of artificial intelligence, Jack Ma remains grounded in reality and observes the phenomenon with optimism.

“It is true that machines or technology will eliminate many jobs, but they also create new ones. The question is, are we ready and qualified for those jobs?”

Seeing Jack Ma passionately criticize the education system like this might leave many wondering how he, as a father, teaches his own children.

While attending the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Jack Ma shared interesting parenting ideas that went viral in China. While it may clash with the views of strict, nerdy parents, it surely resonates with laid-back parents. He emphasizes that he does not teach his children to solely focus on studying but encourages them to find time for other activities.

“I grew up in a poor family and did not receive a good education. I failed many exams without knowing why. However, I believe the most important thing I have is the ability to predict the future. My simple principle is to envision what will happen in the next 10 years and then do everything possible to reach that goal. I always tell my son that he doesn’t need to be the top student in class; being average is fine as long as his grades are not too poor. Only middle-class students have the opportunity and time to learn other skills.”
