It was constructed under the royal initiative of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and named to honor the hero Khun Han Pitak Phaiwan, a local hero from the Ayutthaya period.

The dam collects water flowing from Khao Yai National Park through the Heo Narok waterfall into the reservoir, making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Nakhon Nayok. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of Khao Yai National Park from the dam's crest and take in the scenery of Nakhon Nayok city behind the dam. It's a great spot for chic photos or cycling to enjoy the beautiful views during this cool season.
