There are several terms that refer to this type of bed. Mostly known as a Murphy bed or a wall bed, this is an awesome feature for small bedrooms. They let you save space without compromising on comfort. Also, there’s a lot more flexibility and the room can be a relaxing oasis at night and an inviting home office or living area the rest of the day.

Bedrooms featuring Murphy beds.

With very little effort and in only a few seconds, the whole bed disappears into the wall and all that’s left is a much more spacious room. Even better, the bed can unfold on top of a sofa which is then revealed and can be used during the day. When you think about it, it doesn’t really matter if you have a tiny bedroom or a spacious one. Some extra floor space can’t be an inconvenient so a Murphy bed is really a good choice for any type of room. It’s a lovely choice in this case in particular because, when in the up position, the connection with the balcony becomes a lot stronger.

Bedroom/ home office transformations.

Since the bed occupies most of the floor space in any bedroom, being able to free up all that space and use it for something else any time you want is a major advantage, especially if the room is tiny.{image by Becki Peckham}. It’s amazing how much a room’s décor can change by simply hiding or revealing a few features. For example, right now the room seems a regular modern bedroom. The desk is a feature often found in this room, although it seems a little bit difficult to use it comfortably because of the large bed. But when the bed disappears into the custom-made cabinetry, the whole room is transformed. It frees up tons of floor space. Now there’s plenty of room to take advantage of the custom-designed desk, to pull out the worktop and use the space as a home office.{images from Valet}. By Gary Wong

Obviously, Murphy beds are most practical in small bedrooms like this one. A regular bed would most likely occupy almost the entire floor space. This way there’s enough room for a work station and lots of storage. This is a very interesting pairing of furniture pieces. The bed fits perfectly in the wall unit and a small sofa is revealed. When the bed folds down, it practically sits on the sofa so there’s no need to even remove it.{images from site}. A Murphy bed gives you the opportunity to create a dual-purpose décor for the room. For example, you can design the room as a home office and cleverly hide the bed in the closet. And if someone needs a place to sleep, just fold down the bed and the room becomes a guest bedroom. This home office has a very functional layout. The desk occupies most of the room but the chair fits nicely in the corner. It’s a perfect placement if you take into the consideration the bed, for now hidden in the closet. Pull it down and the workspace is still easy to access. The bed is very nicely decorated with built-in lighting and that beautiful floral accent piece. The first thing you notice about this bedroom is this beautiful apothecary cabinetry and you think :what an organized person this must be and what a spacious bedroom this must be to have room for such a piece of furniture. In fact, this is not a big bedroom and the cabinet is not just for storage. The middle portion fold down and a Murphy bed then occupies most of the floor space. It’s easy to hide a pull-down bed inside a storage wall. The base becomes a bookshelf and the bed seamlessly disappears leaving no trace behind.

The guest room.

A very elegant Murphy bed which, when folded up, is almost impossible to notice. It perfectly fits into the wall and becomes a part of it. A great look for a guest room in this case.Fold down the bed and a lovely sleeping nook is revealed, with built-in lighting and everything. A very chic reading area with a comfy chair, a matching footstool and a rather simple-looking bookcase. But the bookcase is not entirely what it seems. Slide away the shelves and you’ll be surprised to find a wall bed. The room becomes a sleeping cove for your guests just like that. Having a Murphy bed in the basement is a wonderful idea. This way the basement can be a multifunctional space. Use it as a home office, as a quiet reading room or library or as an extra social space. And if you want to take a nap or guests need to sleep over, fold down the Murphy bed and the room becomes a cozy sleeping area.

Bedroom/ living room designs featuring Murphy beds.

Take a good look at this space. It looks like a regular modern bedroom. It’s not very spacious but the minimalist décor gives it a very chic look. Now you’re probably wondering if this is the same room. The bed disappeared into the wall and the whole room just got a lot bigger. It’s like the Transformers but in a different context. There’s more than one way to hide a Murphy bed. For example, this big but compact unit has huge doors and behind one of them there’s a bed waiting to be needed. Open the door, fold down the bed and you’ll have a cozy and intimate sleeping area yet you’ll still be in touch with the rest of the house. A floor-to-ceiling wall unit like this one is great for storing and hiding lots of things, including pull-down beds. Although massive, it doesn’t appear to take up much space thanks to its sleek built-in design. Notice there are two big white surfaces on either side of the wall and they have handles. Watch what happens when you pull the handles. Two single-person beds are revealed. In the middle there’s a TV media unit so I guess lots of other surprises are hidden in this big white wall. The only thing that gives away the presence of a Murphy bed inside that big closet are those handles. Even so, it’s easy to overlook and admire the décor for what it is right now: a cozy sitting area with a beautiful stone fireplace and iconic Eames Lounge and Ottoman. Notice how beautifully the Murphy bed was included in the rustic cottage-style décor. The color on the closet that frames it is perfectly chosen. It’s common to have a sofa in front of a wall bed. When the bed is folded down, the sofa supports it and so you have two pieces of furniture stacked one on top of the other. In this case, the bed matches the sofa so they form a perfect combo. Another interesting combo, this time featuring this sectional sofa on top of which a fold-down bed can be placed comfortably. The living room becomes a bedroom in a few seconds and you don’t have to reorganize the space at all. This wall unit includes a tilting single bed with slatted base and a bookshelf mounted above, plus the TV unit. A great way to hide a bed in plain sight in the living room.

Perfect for the kids’ room.

Murphy beds are particularly great for the kids’ room. You can have two separate beds in the room without wasting floor space. Just a find to incorporate them in a more complex design. For example, place them on either side of the window.

This colorful bedroom is very lovely and it seems very spacious and airy. That’s because there’s no bed in this picture. But behind that nice little bench/sofa, there’s a comfy bed which folds down on top of it. A great idea for a playroom.

Murphy bunk beds.

Amazing piece of furniture for the kids’ bedroom because they allow you to save floor space. But there’s a way to save even more space: with Murphy bunk beds. They’re two separate beds which disappear into the wall and they can be used independently.

The top one also has a ladder which is also hidden inside the wall when folded up. With bunk beds you save tons of floor space and this allows you to include other features which you might have otherwise compromised on, such as a big work area or more storage. Modern beds feature innovative designs. For example, this system has a special device that helps making the bed and an upholstered safety barrier. Bunk beds let you share a bedroom and have as many beds as a wall can fit. It seems like this room could fit three bunk beds inside this beautifully decorated wall. There’s also this great bed on the adjacent wall which fold down on top of the desk. cr. homedit.com
