How to Build an Online Identity Safely
Nowadays, social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have a significant influence on our daily lives. The open online world allows ordinary people to become famous overnight, especially the lives of "internet idols" that teenagers are keen to follow.
However, due to the nature of online communication, there are both positive and negative impacts. If not cautious, children and youth may fall victim to inappropriate behaviors.
A survey on the situation of “Thai Children and Online Dangers” for ages 6-18, conducted by the Internet Foundation for Development in Thailand in collaboration with the Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) and the Department of Children and Youth, found that over 83% of children use the internet via tablets or smartphones, with 39% using the internet for 6-10 hours a day. 51.7% of children have chatted with strangers online.
33.6% of children share personal information such as addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, and photos of themselves or their families online. 1.8% have sent nude photos or videos of themselves to others online. 35.3% have live-streamed online, while 31% have been bullied online, and 25.4% have arranged to meet online friends. These behaviors can lead to serious dangers.
The statistics reflect that establishing an online identity is not too difficult, but how to do it safely and constructively is crucial. Today, the ThaiHealth website team has advice from Frang - Nareekul Ketprapakorn, a medical student, actress, and YouTuber, who shared her experiences in various roles during the “Good Life Starts with Us” event organized by ThaiHealth from September 5-8 at CentralWorld.
What is an Internet Idol?
“Asst. Prof. Phubet Samutjak” from the Research and International Relations Department at the Institute for Population and Social Research, Mahidol University, defines “internet idols as individuals who gain fame and popularity by creating unique traits to attract societal attention, seeking to establish their identity within society. Internet idols can be categorized into two groups: those who are recognized for their good behavior and excellence in areas such as sports or academics, and those who exhibit extreme behaviors.

“Frang Nareekul” shares that, in her view, an “internet idol” is someone with a large following on social media who should have a positive image, such as being academically talented or skilled in areas like singing, sports, or performing arts. They can serve as good role models for youth and inspire society and their followers.
For teenagers aspiring to be internet idols filled with happiness, “Frang Nareekul” suggests:
1. Discover Yourself
You should try to discover yourself, such as observing what you like, what you fear, which subjects you enjoy learning, and understanding your personality. The sooner you know yourself, the better.
2. Set Clear Goals
Aim to achieve those goals. You must strive to follow your dreams and reach those objectives.
3. Manage Your Time Wisely
You need to allocate your time appropriately to excel in both studies and activities effectively. If you have to juggle multiple tasks, you must prioritize what is most important.
4. Share Your Story
Your presentation should connect with your story. For instance, if you share about food, you might discuss your interest in cooking, any cooking classes you've taken, or your enjoyment of cooking in your free time.
5. Use Social Media Wisely
Today, social media offers various platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, depending on which you are comfortable with or which suits your target audience.

“Frang Nareekul” reveals that she was once inspired by others and wanted to try sharing her own stories, whether it was showcasing food or reviewing places, but she initially struggled with how to film or post videos, finding it challenging to produce her first clip.
“The hardest part isn’t the process of making the clip, but overcoming the fear of whether anyone will watch it, how others will perceive us, or if friends will tease us. It makes you wonder if you’ll do well. It can be exhausting if the feedback isn’t positive, like if someone criticizes you. But upon reflection, I chose not to focus on that because what matters is that what we do doesn’t harm anyone and is something we enjoy. It’s better than regretting not doing it later.”
6. Inspire Others
Internet idols should be positive influences, using their efforts and abilities for the benefit of others, leaving a lasting impression on those who see them and encouraging them to follow.

“Frang Nareekul” shares that during her vacation, she volunteered to teach children in the Czech Republic, a country located in the heart of Europe. She decided to apply because she wanted to give back to others, and giving made her feel more valuable. Although she may not have been the best teacher, at least she introduced the children to Thailand and our national animal, the elephant. Small acts of kindness can have a positive impact on the world; it doesn’t always have to be something grand.
“Being an internet idol has its downsides as well. If you make even a small mistake, it can become a big issue. Therefore, always think before you post,” “Frang Nareekul” concludes.
