How Well Do You Know Waste?
Today, waste management is a significant issue, partly because people dispose of waste without knowing how to separate it or how to do so properly. Mixed waste complicates waste management, while some waste can be recycled, and certain items are hazardous and need to be handled correctly. If we all contribute, we can help improve the state of our planet.
Currently, waste is categorized into four types:
1. Biodegradable/Wet Waste
Examples: Vegetable scraps, fruit peels, food leftovers, leaves, meat scraps.
Characteristics: This type of waste decomposes quickly and can be composted into fertilizer.
2. Recyclable Waste
Examples: Glass, paper, beverage cans, plastic scraps, metal scraps, aluminum, tires, cardboard boxes, drink cartons.
Characteristics: Packaging or leftover materials that can be reused.
3. Hazardous Waste
Examples: Syringes, batteries, flashlight batteries, used engine oil.
Characteristics: Contaminated waste or materials that contain explosives, flammable substances, toxins, pathogens, corrosives, and items that may harm the environment.
4. General Waste
Examples: Snack bags, plastic detergent bags, candy wrappers, instant noodle packets, food plastic bags.
Characteristics: Waste that decomposes slowly and is not worth recycling.
