From 'Son of a Farmer' to Creator of 'Lamborghini': The Wild Bull That the World Dreams Of
Even if you're not a car enthusiast, the name of the luxurious supercar brand 'Lamborghini' has already secured a place in everyone's heart. Whether it's due to the brand's image or the legendary power and strength of its unique engines, akin to a spirited bull, ready to charge forward aggressively.
However, Lamborghini's path to success is not unlike many brands that have faced numerous ups and downs. The road has not been smooth, filled with potholes, and the destination has often seemed like a dead end. Yet, at least this treacherous journey has been rich with colors and life lessons to learn from.
Destiny or Determination?
As a businessman, if you don't start with a passion, it's hard to achieve success. Similarly, Lamborghini began with Ferruccio Lamborghini, a boy born into a family of grape farmers. Though he worked with a hoe and shovel, his interest in mechanics led him to constantly seek knowledge in engineering. Eventually, he decided to seriously arm himself with mechanical skills by enrolling in a technical college in Bologna.
After graduating, Ferruccio Lamborghini worked as a mechanic for a company in Italy. However, before he could fully thrive in his field, the onset of World War II forced him to close the door on opportunities as he was conscripted as a prisoner of war by the British. Yet, luck was on his side when he was assigned to the engine department in the British Army, where he honed his skills repairing various vehicles. This training was quite rigorous, as he had to work with limited engine parts.
After the war, Ferruccio Lamborghini returned home and started a small tractor manufacturing business. Thanks to his impressive craftsmanship, he quickly gained a reputation, allowing him to grow rapidly and become the largest tractor manufacturer in Italy before later branching out into air conditioning production.
Don't Let Anything Stop Your Dreams
After successfully turning his passion into a business, Ferruccio, driven by his love for mechanics, chose to spend his earnings on owning numerous dream supercars, including Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, and the proud stallion, Ferrari.
However, after acquiring his dream supercars, Ferruccio found that the legendary Ferrari could not meet his expectations as a car enthusiast. It is said that he was dissatisfied with the performance of his favorite Ferrari to the extent that he personally approached Enzo Ferrari, the founder of the Ferrari brand. What he received in return was "disdain and indifference to customer needs," which ignited his determination to retaliate by creating a car that was not only better than Ferrari but also one that would listen to customers and be willing to assist them with any issues arising from the cars he built.
He began by hiring the best personnel he could find to realize his dream, leveraging his experience from developing tractors, investing in a new factory, and establishing the company 'Lamborghini Automobili', located just 15 km from Ferrari's factory.
Turning Insults into Applause from Around the World
With the fire of determination ignited, he didn't wait for the new factory to be completed but instead used a corner of the tractor factory as a prototype car production facility. He dedicated every minute to developing the car, participating in every aspect. Whenever he saw something unsatisfactory, he would personally intervene to fix it until the Lamborghini 350 GTV (the prototype version) was completed, marking a new legend in the supercar industry for the world to see.
This golden moment was a peak time for the brand, as nearly every sports car model Lamborghini produced became highly popular, often selling out. However, the passion and determination that Ferruccio used as fuel to drive the business may not have been enough to sustain its glory forever. Following the bubble crisis in Italy, the company, which still produced tractors and had a dealership in South Africa, faced canceled orders from all sides, compounded by the government of the Republic of Genoa canceling all orders, leading to a dire financial situation that forced the sports car manufacturer to change hands multiple times. Today, Lamborghini is owned by Audi AG, part of the Volkswagen Group.
Nevertheless, despite various obstacles, the strength of the brand, fueled by passion, continues to ignite and propel the wild bull forward relentlessly.
