Do you know what foods we eat every day that contain sodium?

  • Sodium is found in natural foods such as various meats, vegetables, fruits of all kinds, grains, and legumes.
  • Processed foods like sausages, pork rolls, meatballs, salted fish, and canned foods.
  • Hidden sodium from food products that are not salty but contain sodium, such as monosodium glutamate, bouillon cubes, various seasoning powders, and baking powder found in bread, pies, buns, cakes, and donuts, as well as preservatives in ready-to-eat foods.
  • Added sodium in foods.
  • Sodium nitrite or substances that soften texture.
  • Monosodium glutamate, or MSG, which has little salty taste but is rich in sodium.
  • Sodium benzoate or preservatives found in almost all types of food.
  • Sodium alginate or stabilizers found in ice cream, glass noodles, and tapioca pearls.
  • Sodium bicarbonate or baking powder used in bakery products and cakes.
  • Sodium sorbate or preservatives in cheese.

Our body only needs 1500 milligrams of sodium per day, which is sufficient. The maximum amount that can be consumed without adverse effects is 2000 milligrams per day, equivalent to 1 teaspoon of salt or 4 teaspoons of plain water.

However, survey results are alarming as Thais consume an average of 4351.7 milligrams of sodium per day. We can reduce sodium intake by reading labels every time.
