Where Does ‘Bangkok’ Stand? In the Ranking of the Most Livable Cities in the World
Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has ranked 140 cities around the world based on livability, considering five main factors:
- Security includes the frequency of minor crimes, the frequency of serious crimes, threats and insecurity, military conflict threats, and threats from unrest or political conflict.
- Healthcare covers the availability of private healthcare facilities, the quality of private medical care, public health care readiness, availability of over-the-counter medications, and general health indicators.
- Culture and Environment assesses temperature and humidity (risk of global warming), climate conditions, corruption, social and religious constraints, sports readiness, cultural availability, food and beverage options, and consumer goods and services.
- Education evaluates the availability of private education, the quality of private education, and other public education indicators.
- Infrastructure examines road network quality, public transport quality, international connectivity readiness, availability of quality housing, energy supply quality, water quality, and telecommunications quality.

For Bangkok, the overall score is 66 out of 100, ranking it 98th out of 140 cities assessed. It trails behind Singapore (35th) and Kuala Lumpur (78th). The EIU categorizes countries scoring between 60-70 as still exhibiting negative factors affecting daily life.
However, cities in Southeast Asia closely following Bangkok and worth watching are Hanoi (107th) and Ho Chi Minh City (116th), Vietnam, which, although not in the top 100, are among the top 5 most developed cities in the world. Hanoi ranks second in development globally with a growth rate of 5.5%, while Ho Chi Minh City ranks fifth with a growth rate of 4.4%.
The most livable city in the world in 2018 remains Vienna, Austria, which has previously held the title of the most livable city. Interestingly, Australia and Canada have three cities each in the top 10 livable cities. The livable cities in Australia include Melbourne (2nd), Sydney (5th), and Adelaide (10th), while Canada boasts Calgary (4th), Vancouver (7th), and Toronto (7th).
