How to Keep Pets in a Condo Without Drama!
“Pets” are a delightful addition that many homes simply can't do without, right? Whether it's a dog, cat, fish, or small animals like hamsters, those who live in spacious homes can easily keep any pet without worry, as there's plenty of room for the little troublemakers to play.
However, for those living in condos, apartments, or dorms with limited space but still want a cute pet to alleviate loneliness, today we have some tips on how to care for small pets without the fear of drama.
- Types of Pets Suitable for Small Spaces
In a condo with limited space, the best pets to keep are small, quiet ones that won't cause problems, such as:
- Fish - It's recommended to keep small fish and decorate with aquatic plants, like neon tetras or cardinal fish, which usually school together. When you're tired, looking at the aquarium can be very relaxing, and it doesn't take up much space; a small tank will suffice. Nowadays, fish tanks come with filtration systems to manage waste, so you won't need to change the filter frequently.
- Birds - Such as parrots, which can be kept in a cage and are not loud enough to disturb neighbors.
- Rabbits - These adorable fluffy creatures are easy to care for and don't require much space. Breeds like the Netherland Dwarf are compact with soft, dense fur, while Czech Frosty rabbits are round-faced and sturdy, making them equally cute.
- Squirrels - These small, affordable pets are incredibly cute. Popular breeds include the white-bellied squirrel, black-backed squirrel, and red-bellied squirrel, known for their beautiful bushy tails. They can be found for around 200-600 baht, and if you raise them from before four months old, they are easier to care for and more obedient.
- Rats - There are various popular breeds, including chinchillas, hamsters, and degus. Rats don't make annoying noises, but owners must regularly clean their equipment, including litter boxes and cages, to prevent odors and provide toys for stress relief.
- Prairie Dogs - These social animals enjoy being in groups, are about the same size as rabbits, and are affectionate, making them easy to fall in love with.
- What Do We Need to Prepare?
First, before deciding to keep any pet, make sure to study their habits, behaviors, diets, and necessary equipment. This way, you can assess whether you are suitable to care for them and what adjustments you need to make, such as:
- If keeping fish, you will need a tank, food, oxygen, and other essential equipment, including considerations for changing the water.
- For birds like parrots, you will need a cage, food, and small toys for them to play with or perch on.
- For rabbits, you need to prepare a cage, a water bottle attached to the cage, and ceramic dishes for pellets and hay. It's recommended to provide fresh and dried hay as the main diet, supplemented with small amounts of vegetables and fruits for health and digestion. Don't forget a litter box for the rabbit!
- For squirrels, you must prepare a suitable cage (home) that is cozy and safe. The cage should have a water container and can be decorated to make the squirrel feel secure. Squirrels can eat various foods, especially fruits, vegetables, and grains. Additionally, prepare a bag and leash for taking your little squirrel outside.
- For rats, you should prepare a suitable habitat, food, a wheel for exercise, drinking water, and a litter box. It's essential to study their behavior in detail and get familiar with them before playing.
- For prairie dogs, you need a cage with closely spaced bars to prevent escape and not too high to avoid injury from falls. Avoid painted cages as they can affect long-term health. Their daily diet should include hay and pellets, with a clean water bottle attached to the cage. Change the hay daily and clean the cage tray at least twice a week to prevent germs and odors.
Each type of pet requires different care because, although they are pets, they are still living beings. Therefore, it's normal to prepare the necessary items to care for these little ones.
