Warning: Sadness Should Not Last More Than 3 Weeks
The Department of Mental Health is concerned that on October 13, the emotional state of Thai people may worsen due to increased feelings of sadness. However, it believes that this will pass. Sadness is a normal reaction, but it should not last more than 3 weeks. It is advised to observe symptoms such as excessive crying, isolation, incoherent speech, agitation, depression, and daydreaming, and to consult a doctor if these occur.
Dr. Boonruang Trairuangvivat, the Director-General of the Department of Mental Health, spoke about mental health care and ways to alleviate sadness as the first anniversary of the late King Rama IX's passing approaches. Since October 13, 2016, when the King passed away, all Thai people have been in a state of mourning for the loss of their monarch. As this date approaches, it is believed that the emotional sadness among the Thai population will increase. This sadness is similar to that felt on the day of the King's passing, but the public has received continuous mental health support and has somewhat prepared themselves, leading to a stronger resilience to get through this period.
Dr. Boonruang stated that experiencing loss and sadness is a normal response. However, sadness should not last longer than 2 to 3 weeks. If it persists beyond this, professional care is necessary. When observing the behavior of those around you, if you notice signs such as continuous crying, isolation, incoherent speech, agitation, depression, or daydreaming, it is important to engage with them. If their condition does not improve, they should be taken to a medical professional for care, and efforts should be made to transform their sadness into strength.
