Which 77 Provinces Do Foreign Tourists Prefer the Most?
As many have predicted, the most favored tourist destination for foreign visitors is the Southern region. In the first half of 2017, there were 13.08 million overnight stays by visitors, generating over 312 billion baht in revenue from foreign tourists. It is clear that when looking at individual provinces, Bangkok consistently ranks as the number one destination in Thailand.
TerraBKK Research has been monitoring the Domestic Tourism Situation from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, particularly focusing on foreign visitors during the first six months of 2017. The findings are as follows:

The Southern region has the highest number of overnight stays by foreign tourists in Thailand, with approximately 13.08 million visitors. Notable provinces where foreign tourists stay at least 100,000 per month include Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga, Surat Thani, and Songkhla. Overall, the Southern region generated a total revenue of 312 billion baht from foreign tourists.
The Central region is represented by Bangkok, the only province in Thailand with over 1.85 million foreign tourists staying per month, the highest in the country. Following Bangkok are Ayutthaya and Samut Prakan, each with around 100,000 visitors per month. Over the past six months, the Central region recorded 12.97 million foreign tourists and generated 237 billion baht in revenue from them.
The Eastern region ranks third in terms of foreign tourist overnight stays, with 5.26 million visitors and a revenue of 101 billion baht. Notably, Chonburi stands out with an average of 746,000 overnight stays per month during the first half of 2017.
The Northern region saw 2.36 million foreign tourists staying, generating 21 billion baht in revenue. Chiang Mai is the most prominent province in this region, with an average of 256,000 overnight stays per month, contributing an average of 2.71 billion baht per month from foreign tourists.
The Western region recorded 0.95 million foreign tourist overnight stays and generated 7.93 billion baht in revenue, with averages in the tens of thousands per month. Prachuap Khiri Khan is the province with the highest number of overnight stays by foreign tourists.
The Northeastern region attracted the least overnight stays among Thai regions. However, Nong Khai, an important border province in the Northeast, had an average of 54,000 foreign tourists staying per month. Overall, the Northeastern region recorded 81,000 foreign tourists and generated 1.88 billion baht in revenue during the first half of 2017.
