Why Do We Need to Renew Car Insurance Every Year?
We need to renew our car insurance every year because if we don't, we won't be able to pay our annual vehicle tax. The law mandates this because the money we pay for car insurance is pooled into a compensation fund for accident victims, which is then used to provide medical care for those injured in road accidents. This ensures that anyone injured in a traffic accident can receive timely medical treatment.
Coverage of Car Insurance
Car insurance covers medical expenses incurred from road accidents, divided into two types: immediate coverage and coverage after liability is determined.
1. Immediate Coverage
Immediate coverage, or "initial damage compensation," does not require determining fault because everyone should receive medical treatment promptly after an incident, totaling no more than 65,000 baht.
- Medical expenses for injuries, based on actual costs, but not exceeding 30,000 baht.
- In case of death, loss of limbs, or permanent disability, a payment of 35,000 baht is provided.
2. Coverage After Liability is Determined
If we are found to be the victim and sustain injuries, we will receive compensation for damages exceeding the initial compensation as follows:
- Additional medical expenses based on actual costs for injuries, up to 80,000 baht.
- In case of death, loss of limbs, or permanent disability, an additional 300,000 baht.
- For loss of limbs, depending on the case, between 200,000 to 300,000 baht.
- Compensation for hospitalization (inpatient) at 200 baht per day, up to 20 days, totaling 4,000 baht.
The total maximum coverage amount must not exceed 304,000 baht.
And the maximum liability coverage remains as follows:
- Maximum liability per accident for vehicles with up to 7 seats is 5,000,000 baht per incident.
- Maximum liability per accident for vehicles with more than 7 seats is 10,000,000 baht per incident.

What If the Vehicle That Hit Us Doesn't Have Insurance?
For medical treatment in case of injury, the actual costs or up to 30,000 baht will be covered, and in case of death, 35,000 baht (this is the minimum amount required by law) must be paid by the vehicle owner. The vehicle owner must also reimburse the compensation fund along with an additional 20% within 7 days.
