The "Pathway at Pathumwan Intersection" is Now Open: A Public Art Space Inviting Name Contest with Prizes Worth Over 100,000 Baht
Siam Synergy Trade Association, along with local businesses in the Siam area, has renovated the Pathumwan Intersection pathway to facilitate pedestrian traffic through a Universal Design approach. They are inviting the public to participate in a naming contest for this new pathway, with a total prize of 100,000 Baht.
The Siam area is a vital part of Bangkok, serving as a hub for business, economic growth, education, and artistic innovation. A study conducted in 2015, in collaboration with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited, revealed that the pedestrian bridge at Pathumwan Intersection, which originally connected the National Stadium BTS Station with the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, MBK Center, Siam Discovery, and Siam Square, was outdated and narrow. It could not accommodate the anticipated growth in pedestrian traffic, projected to increase by no less than 4.9% annually, along with a 9.83% annual growth in tourism. Additionally, the original structure did not adequately support accessibility for the elderly or disabled individuals.
Therefore, since 2016, the Siam Synergy Trade Association has been improving the Pathumwan Intersection pathway with private funding to create a beautiful space that effectively accommodates all groups, including the elderly and disabled, while also serving as a recreational area for the public. This new pathway draws inspiration from the name of the intersection, featuring lotus leaves that provide shade for pedestrians. Moreover, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre will collaborate to transform this area into an art district, a significant center for creativity among Thai and international artists, showcasing outdoor art exhibitions. To celebrate the inaugural opening of the Pathumwan Intersection pathway, 13 renowned Thai street artists, known internationally for their work in graffiti, illustration, drawing, and painting, will come together to create vibrant installations on lotus leaves. These artists include Yuree Kensaku, P7 (Pheeraphong Limsatharong), Chakkrakrit Anantakul, Rakkit Khwanhawej, Metha Noijinda, TRK, Pruch Sintunava, Peap Tarr & Lisa Mam, Mauy, JECK BKK, Floyd, and Chanarong Klukiet, marking one of the largest gatherings of leading street artists in Bangkok.
Major cities around the world feature elevated walkways in key areas to ensure safe and convenient pedestrian access, connecting to main public transport systems while also serving as recreational spaces that inspire and attract tourists globally, such as the Highline in New York, Seoul Sky Garden, and Promenade plantée in Paris.
In this regard, Siam Synergy invites everyone to participate in the naming contest for the new Pathumwan Intersection pathway, with a total prize of 100,000 Baht. Details and contest rules can be followed, and submissions can be sent via mail, with the envelope marked "Entry for Naming and Designing the Pathumwan Intersection Pathway" to Siam Piwat Co., Ltd.
