Seniors are at a stage in life where, in addition to paying attention to their diet, mental health is also crucial. This age often brings many life changes, and the emotions and feelings of seniors can be particularly fragile, potentially leading to poor mental health. This can manifest in physical symptoms such as insomnia, loss of appetite, or fatigue. Before we explore ways to become a happy senior, let's understand the nature and circumstances of aging to prepare ourselves.

The Nature and Changes of Aging

1. Feelings of Loneliness and Isolation As people in this age group often have more free time after retirement, they may find themselves separated from loved ones. Additionally, physical decline, such as poor eyesight or hearing, can limit activities. Feelings of loneliness in seniors often accompany other emotions and can lead to various issues, such as depression, loss of appetite, or illness.

2. Sadness from Loss For instance, losing a loved one can bring about negative emotions, including loneliness and forgetfulness. If the deceased was someone with whom they had a strong bond, the senior may feel a deep sense of loss.

3. Anger This can arise during conflicts with children or grandchildren when their opinions are not acknowledged.

4. Sensitivity Seniors may feel undervalued and believe their family members are uninterested in them.

5. Nostalgia Seniors may find themselves reflecting on the past, sharing stories with friends, or visiting familiar places. Looking back can help them assess whether their lives have been fulfilling. If they feel dissatisfied with their past, it may lead to frustration. However, if they reflect positively, they can adjust their mindset to appreciate the impermanence of life and find happiness in their age.

6. Anxiety This includes fears of relying on children or grandchildren, lacking confidence, feeling incapable, or fearing neglect, which can lead to exhaustion, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, or fainting.

7. Fear of Abandonment This arises as they become less able to care for themselves.

8. Irritability This can occur when they are less able to do things independently, leading to dissatisfaction with others' actions and becoming overly critical.

Just 9 Ways to Become a Happy Senior

However, these issues can be mitigated if seniors learn to adapt and accept the changes they face. Today, we will share 9 ways to help you become a happy senior.

1. Seniors should be flexible and open to the opinions of their children and grandchildren, considering how to coexist with family and others in the best way possible while minimizing conflicts.

2. Seniors should come to terms with the natural cycle of life, including birth, aging, sickness, and death.

3. Seniors should view their lives positively and take pride in being a support for younger generations.

4. When feeling anxious, such as worrying about the struggles of their children or their own health, they should talk to close family members to express their feelings.

5. They should seek hobbies that bring them joy and have mental value, such as gardening or caring for pets.

6. Engage socially with others to share experiences and alleviate worries.

7. Rely on faith for emotional support, such as praying, visiting temples, doing good deeds, or practicing meditation.

9. Maintain a cheerful mindset, avoiding stress, irritability, or being overly critical.

It's not just seniors who need to adapt; caregivers must also adjust. When both parties can adapt to each other, it leads to comfort, relaxation, and happiness for both the giver and receiver.

If anyone is interested in understanding seniors better, the Thai Health Promotion Foundation is hosting an exhibition titled “Aging Land: A Wonder World,” inviting you to explore and understand who seniors are, how they should be cared for, and how to coexist with them in families and society. The exhibition runs until August 31, 2017, at the rotating exhibition zone on the 2nd floor of the Thai Health Learning Center.
